New Haven Symphony Orchestra
Announces 2008-09 Family Concert Series

New Haven, CT, May 27, 2007: The New Haven Symphony Orchestra (NHSO) announces the 2008-09 Family Concert Series. Come join the excitement as New Haven’s fastest growing concert series returns. Three concerts feature ensembles ranging from 4 to 50 musicians, special guests, one of the largest organs in the world, and music ranging from Vivaldi’s The Four Season to Copland’s Appalachian Spring.

The concerts are fun and instructive and children have the opportunity to join in. Each concert is preceded by a 30 minute, instrumental petting zoo. Kids have the opportunity to meet the NHSO musicians and play instruments.

The series consists of three concerts:
Weather and the Seasons
Saturday, November 22, 2008 • Omni Hotel Ballroom, New Haven
Concert: 2-3pm • Instrument Discovery Zone: 1:30pm

From the scorching summer sun to the icy cold of winter, Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons springs to life. Featuring a ten piece ensemble of the NHSO’s string players and harpsichordist, Earth’s 365 day cycle is brought to life through music. Meet special guest, Channel 8 meteorologist, Dr. Mel who will explain our notoriously unpredictable New England weather patterns and how they define our seasons.

Words and Music: Walton’s Façade
Saturday, February 7, 2009 • Omni Hotel Ballroom, New Haven
Concert: 2-3pm • Instrument Discovery Zone: 1:30pm

You’ll want to come dressed for high tea as this performance takes place in a Victorian English Tea Room with palms, aspidistra, etc. Walton’s Façade combines Edith Sitwell’s wonderful nonsense rhymes with music in a variety of styles from Polka to Tango to Waltz. These lively rhymes and crazy dances create a kind of surreal but magical experience that makes you want to dance and laugh.

Red, White, and Blue
Saturday, March 28, 2009 • Woolsey Hall
Concert: 2-3pm • Instrument Discovery Zone: 1:30pm

What better way to usher in the spring season that with NHSO Associate Conductor Gerald Steichen and a 50 piece orchestra? Some of America’s greatest composers will be explored including Connecticut’s own Charles Ives, Leonard Bernstein, John Philip Sousa, and Aaron Copland’s masterpiece, Appalachian Springs.

Subscriptions are available, $30 for an adult and $10 for a child’s subscription. Single tickets are also available $12/adult, $5/child. To purchase subscriptions or single tickets contact the Shubert Theater Box Office at 203-562-5666 or visit newhavensymphony.org.
