NEW HAVEN, CT, July 30, 2010. The New Haven Symphony Orchestra (NHSO), Music Director William Boughton and Associate Conductor Gerald Steichen are pleased to announce the 2010-11 concert season.

The 117th season journeys through significant works of the romantic period from time-honored composers. The four symphonies of Johannes Brahms are the foundation of the symphony season. The NHSO celebrates the anniversaries of the births of composers Robert Schumann to open the season and Gustav Mahler to close the season with his epic “Resurrection” Symphony. Season highlights include Henryk Górecki’s response to an 18 year old girl’s writings on a Gestapo prison wall, a seldom heard work by Giuseppe Martucci, and romantic pieces by Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss.

The NHSO is delighted to introduce a number of new artists to our audiences, including violinist Elissa Lee Koljonen, pianist Andrew von Oeyen, soprano Hana Park, and Italian guest conductor Aldo Sisillo. Concertmaster Ani Kavafian continues her complete Mozart Violin Concertos Project with the composer’s Turkish Concerto, a project that began last season and received great praise.

Our Music Alive Composers-in-Residence, Jin Hi Kim and Augusta Read Thomas, continue their educational programs throughout Connecticut schools and bring two new works—Kim’s for chamber ensemble and the world premiere of Read Thomas’s Radiant Circles for orchestra.

Back for his twelfth season with the NHSO Jerry Steichen leads our ever popular Pops Series. In addition to our celebrated annual Holiday Extravaganza with mezzo-soprano Heather Johnson, the NHSO will present Big Band Salute featuring soprano Mara Bonde and closing out the season is Celtic Dreams highlighting traditional Irish songs and dance with the vocal stylings of tenor William Ferguson!
