DESCRIPTION:The Music\n\nJoel Thompson\nTo Awaken the Sleeper (New England Premiere)\n \nDmitri Shostakovich\nSymphony No. 11\, “The Year 1905” \nThe NHSO’s residency at SCSU opens with Alasdair Neale conducting two powerful works offering mediation and action for the challenges of our current times. Composer-in-Residence Joel Thompson narrates the New England premiere of his setting of texts by iconic author James Baldwin in “To Awaken the Sleeper” and the NHSO plays Shostakovich’s ode to musical resistance with Symphony No. 11\, “The Year 1905.” \nJoel Thompson says\, “Given the sort of turmoil as it relates to race in our society\, Baldwin’s writings were sort of a beacon for me\, a source of comfort a way for me to focus my craft… In the world of classical music in which my identity is historically marginalized\, having a space here\, where I can speak and be heard is very important\, and Baldwin faced similar obstacles.” \n\nThe Performers\nNew Haven Symphony Orchestra\nAlasdair Neale\, Conductor & Music Director\nJoel Thompson\, Narrator & NHSO Composer-in-Residence \nBuy Tickets\n\nSupport Medical Aid in Ukraine \nPlease consider making a donation to Doctors United 4 Ukraine\, an organization formed in May 2022 by faculty at Yale University and Yale Medical School. SUMMARY:Miller Conducts Schumann & Beethoven
DESCRIPTION:The Music\n\nLudwig van Beethoven\nPiano Concerto No. 2 \nRobert Schumann\nSymphony No. 2 \nValentin Silvestrov\nHymne \nEncore: Franz Lehar\n“Vilja’s Song” from the opera The Merry Widow \n\nThe Performers\nNew Haven Symphony Orchestra\nTania Miller\, Music Director Candidate\nChelsea Guo\, piano & soprano soloist \nCanadian Conductor Tania Miller has distinguished herself as a dynamic interpreter\, musician and innovator. Maestra Miller was Music Director of Canada’s Victoria Symphony for 14 years\, and was named Music Director Emerita for her commitment to the orchestra and community.  She has distinguished herself as a visionary leader and innovator with a deep commitment to contemporary repertoire and composers and has gained a national reputation as a highly effective advocate and communicator for the arts. An avid writer about music and the arts\, her writing has been featured in Symphony Magazine\, Toronto’s Globe and Mail\, and Better Humans. \nChelsea Guo has already attracted international attention as a pianist and soprano of remarkable gifts. Her dual artistry is featured in her 2021 debut recording\, “Chelsea Guo: Chopin in My Voice”\, which includes beloved Chopin solo repertoire\, along with two Chopin songs and one Rossini aria in which the artist accompanies herself. The inclusion of the Rossini aria is typical of many of the concert programs Chelsea offers\, which include both piano and vocal works\, enriching the opportunity for her audience to experience music in a broader context and displaying the influence that singers had on composers of their time. Gramophone Magazine included the recording in their Essential New Albums and Classic FM featured Chelsea for an entire week as a “Young Classical Star.” The album reached #7 on the Billboard Traditional Classical Chart and received five stars from BBC Music Magazine\, which wrote: “Here is a rare talent.” \n\nSponsors
