DESCRIPTION:The NHSO’s Free Family Series features exciting programs designed to delight children ages 3-8 and their families. These free\, interactive concerts will take place at kid-friendly venues across southern Connecticut\, creating a magical introduction to live music\, storytelling\, and education for young audiences. \n“Clap\, Clap\, Stomp!” will feature lively concerts by fiddler Austin Scelzo and vocalist Charlie Widmer from the Bluegrass band On The Trail. They will also include banjo soloist as well as NHSO musician Sam Bobinski on bass. Entering the world of Bluegrass\, kids will dance along to upbeat songs and explore the music and scenery of Appalachia with eye-catching visuals. \nThis performance will be adapted for audience members with sensory processing disorders and Autism. Audience members will be able to take advantage of the specially designed space within the school\, use gross motor equipment to self-regulate\, make use of complimentary ear protectors and fidgets\, and take breaks as needed. The lighting will be dimmed\, and the musicians will play at a reduced volume. For questions about accommodations offered at the sensory-friendly performances\, please email Education@NewHavenSymphony.org. \nThere is no registration required for this event. We will see you there! \n\nAbout the Guest Artists \nIn 2023 fiddler Austin Scelzo was named Connecticut Arts Hero by the state of Connecticut. Most recently\, he won the 2025 Momentum Industry Involvement Award from the International Bluegrass Music Association. His Bluegrass journey began with the Western CT based group the “Angry O’Haras\,” then later “On the Trail\,” with which he recorded fiddle and vocals. He also performs and records with the “Rock Hearts\,” a traditional Bluegrass group. In addition\, he teaches Wernick Method Jam classes and launched the Connecticut Bluegrass Music Association. \n  \nCharlie Widmer is a multi-genre singer\, songwriter\, actor\, guitarist\, arranger\, and producer based in Connecticut. SUMMARY:Free Family Concert: Year of the Dragon
DESCRIPTION:Perfect for ages 3-7\, this free family concert will explore the music and stories of the Chinese Zodiac and celebrate 2024’s Year of the Dragon! \nOn this 50-minute program\, international erhu virtuoso Dr. Chia-Yu Joy Lu of Wesleyan University will play alongside a NHSO violinist Stephanie Hug and NHSO pianist William Braun. The erhu is a two-stringed instrument played with a bow that is not only popular in China\, but in East Asian countries that are influenced by Chinese culture. \nThe concert’s music will include Two Tigers\, Thunder in a Drought\, Joy & Happiness\, Grasshopper Tricks the Rooster\, Beautiful Flowers and Full Moon\, and more. While the music plays\, a Chinese calligraphy artist will simultaneously hand-draw characters on a screen and families will have the opportunity to practice writing the characters in provided program books. \nThis performance will take place following the Lunarfest Parade in New Haven. More details will be forthcoming on the Lunarfest website. \n\nAbout the Guest Artist \nBorn and raised in Taiwan\, Dr. Joy Lu has studied erhu since her childhood and was awarded several prizes in erhu and zhonghu (alto erhu) performances. She is a musician\, researcher\, ensemble director\, conductor\, music teacher\, and language educator\, holding a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University\, an M.A. in Ethnomusicology from the University of Sheffield\, U.K.\, and a B.F.A. in erhu performance and music education from National Taiwan Normal University\, Taiwan. She has published a music textbook (Music Textbook for Vocational High School\, 2006\, Kuang Mau Books Co.\, LTD)\, erhu music scores\, and erhu music albums that have been distributed in Taiwan and China. She has appeared in Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center\, Yale University\, and Boston College\, and has been directing Wesleyan Chinese Music Ensemble for over a decade. It is accessible by wheelchair\, and the seating inside the room is flexible and moveable. There is an adjacent gross motor room and “calm down” classroom down the hall from the performance space. (Both are wheelchair accessible.) Audience members can also leave to go for an outdoor break\, and there are sidewalks all around the playground area.\nAudience members will be able to make use of complimentary ear protectors and fidgets. The lighting will be dimmed\, and the musicians will play at a reduced volume. DESCRIPTION: Join the New Haven Symphony Orchestra String Quintet and singer/host Charlie Widmer as we explore Harvest/Autumn music from around the world. This 45-minute program is interactive and perfect for wiggly\, enthusiastic audience members. NHSO Family Concerts are fun\, interactive\, and designed for children ages 3-9. FREE for the whole family! \nThis performance on November 6 will be adapted to be sensory friendly. What does this mean? At this performance you can expect: \n\nLowered lights\nLower volume from musicians\nA quiet\, chill-out room\nRoom in the back of the performance space where you can still watch/hear the concert but be engaged with other activities\nFidgets will be available\nInternal ear plugs will be available\, but we recommend bringing your own noise-cancelling headphones if you have them.\n\nDo you have questions about this performance or want to ask about other accommodations? Please reach out to Engagement@NewHavenSymphony.org. \n\n \nCharlie Widmer is a multi-genre singer\, actor\, songwriter\, guitarist\, arranger\, and producer based in Connecticut. He received his Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Western Connecticut State University in 2016 and has been professionally singing and performing ever since. His singing credits include performances with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra\, Ivoryton Playhouse\, Playhouse on the Shore\, Salt Marsh Opera\, Opera Theater of Connecticut\, backup vocals for Josh Groban (Madison Square Garden/Radio City Musical Hall)\, Sarah Brightman (Radio City Music Hall)\, and 30 Seconds to Mars (City Winery NYC)\, and many others in both musical theater and opera alike. Charlie is also lead singer in Sub-Urban (Hip-Hop/Soul) and a singer/guitarist in On the Trail (Bluegrass).
