Click here to subscribe today.  \n\n\n\nOn the Program\n\nAntonín Dvořák Symphony No. 9\, “New World”\nCourtney Bryan Visual Rhythms\nWilliam Grant Still Lenox Avenue \n\n \n\nFeatured Performers\nNew Haven Symphony Orchestra\nPerry So\, conductor & music director\nNew Haven Heritage Chorale \n \n \n\nAbout this Performance\n\nDvořák’s New World Symphony anchors this soulful celebration of cultural identity and belonging\, with works by Courtney Bryan and William Grant Still. \n\nAntonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9\, “From the New World” is one of the most beloved works in classical music—but its story is often told without naming the people who shaped it. During his time in America\, Dvořák found his deepest inspiration in the musical traditions of Black Americans and Indigenous peoples. Spirituals and Black church music guided his belief that America’s musical voice should grow from these roots. This program centers the traditions that influenced him. \nWilliam Grant Still’s music captures the rhythms\, depth\, and imagination of Black American life\, offering a vivid portrait of the cultural landscape that shaped generations of composers. \nThe concert also features Courtney Bryan\, the NHSO’s Composer-in-Residence and one of today’s most compelling American composers. Rooted in the sound of the Black church\, improvisation\, and contemporary classical writing\, Bryan’s Visual Rhythms invites listeners to hear music as movement\, color\, and spiritual expression. (Throughout this season and the next\, she will work closely with New Haven residents\, young musicians in the Young Composer Project\, and the NHSO in creating new artistic connections.) \nHeard alongside Bryan and Still\, Dvořák’s New World Symphony reveals the rich cultural lineage that captivated him. The familiar “Goin’ Home” theme will take on new resonance when placed with the musical traditions that helped inspire it. \nConcert Sponsors\n\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n\n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\nExplore the Music\n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n\nThis concert is presented as part of Connecticut Orchestra Month\, a statewide celebration of the vibrant orchestral scene across Connecticut. CT Orchestras play nearly 300 concerts each year for more than 185\,000 people\, including 45\,000 students! This March\, new and returning audience members can experience and enjoy concerts all month long. Learn more and view the concert calendar at CTOrchestraMonth.org.

DESCRIPTION:Considering tickets to more than one concert this season? Choose 3 concerts and you will save 20% on tickets. Click here to subscribe today.  \n\n\n\nOn the Program\n\nDerrick Skye Between Suns\nSilvestre Revueltas La noche de los Mayas\nGeorge Gershwin An American in Paris \n\n \n\nFeatured Performers\nNew Haven Symphony Orchestra\nPerry So\, conductor & music director\nBrian Jarawa Gray\, drums\nMichael Mills\, drums\nSCSU Blue Steel Drumline \n \n \n\nAbout this Performance\n\nAt the heart of this rhythm-driven program is Derrick Skye’s Between Suns\, a powerful West African drum concerto that illuminates how African rhythms pulse through classical\, jazz\, and Latin traditions—echoed in the vibrant energy of Revueltas’ La noche de los Mayas and Gershwin’s An American in Paris. Topping it off\, the program will include a show-stopping moment from SCSU’s very own Blue Steel Drumline. \nAbout the centerpiece of this program\, Between Suns: \nIn Between Suns\, each movement represents a distinct solar system—an imagined space where rhythm is gravity and the West African drums serve as both traveler and guide. The solo drums and orchestra orbit a central pulse—the “sun”—with shifting gravitational forces shaping their interactions. The work explores how rhythm constructs identity\, memory\, and interconnection across time and space. Between Suns draws connections between musical vocabularies from traditions found in Ghana\, Togo\, Mali\, Morocco\, and Senegal\, woven together with instrumentation\, timbres\, and harmonies rooted in Western European classical music. Each of these African countries is home to multiple ethnic groups whose histories and musical practices extend across national borders. \nTicket holders are welcome to join Music Director Perry So and composer Derrick Skye for a free pre-concert chat from 2-2:30pm in the Lyman Center to learn more about this program. \n\nFood Drive to Benefit SCSU Student Food Pantry\nPlease bring a donation to this concert! SCSU’s Food Pantry plays a crucial role in addressing food insecurity among students. The most needed items are instant noodles\, canned veggies\, cereal\, mac & cheese\, rice\, chips\, and hygiene/toiletries. Thank you for your help and support. \n\nConcert Sponsors

Each planet will be introduced by spoken word performances curated by Hip-hop poet and playwright Aaron Jafferis\, and Elm City Girls’ Choir will lend their voices to a mystical finale. \n\nThe program opens with Tumblebird Contrails by Gabriella Smith\, standing in for the planet Earth\, which is notably absent from Holst’s Suite of Planets. Smith is a composer whose work invites listeners to find joy in climate action. Her music comes from a love of play\, exploring new instrumental sounds\, and creating musical arcs that transport audiences into sonic landscapes inspired by the natural world. An “outright sensation” (LA Times)\, her music “exudes inventiveness with a welcoming personality\, rousing energy and torrents of joy” (NY Times).\n \n\nListen to Smith’s introduction of her piece:\n \n\nThe concert will then launch into Holst’s magnificent “Planets” Suite\, which stretches the imagination and invites you to explore the sounds and themes of deep cosmic emotions like joy\, war\, old age\, and more. Each planet will start with an invocation by four award-winning Connecticut poets. \n\n\n\n\nConcert Sponsors

They play video game music. Sort of. They use video game soundtracks as a jumping off point for a party\, a nonstop display of kinetic musicianship that blends contemporary art music with dozens of pop styles\, steeped in the language of the Internet. \nEstablished in 2014\, the band’s core is made of six game audio professionals that serve as the primary arrangers and performing mainstays. But\, like a frightened cat\, Discocactus can grow up to four times its normal size when threatened (or for big projects). \nEach of DiscoCactus’s members is a world-class performer in their own right. Their members have studied at some of the world’s top conservatories\, written music for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales\, toured the world with Video Games Live\, and more. You’ve heard some of them in games like Celeste\, Destiny 2\, Sid Meier’s Civilization VI\, and Final Fantasy XV. You’ve heard SEVERAL of them in Anew: The Distant Light and Mortal Kombat 11. \nWhen it’s time to play as DiscoCactus\, these six performers form like Voltron\, bringing all of their experience and power down on one glorious purpose: To make you dance! Some members have debuted operas\, some have studied Brazilian pop\, and some improvise. Together\, they combine unique perspectives to make a show that transcends genre and transforms the music  in fresh\, exciting ways. You don’t have to know a thing about video game music to enjoy DiscoCactus. You don’t even have to know a thing about music! SUMMARY:Danzas Sinfónicas
DESCRIPTION:2023 Latin GRAMMY triple-nominee Pacho Flores makes his NHSO debut with Daniel Freiberg’s new Trumpet Concerto\, and Perry So leads the NHSO in music by Arturo Márquez\, Gabriela Lena Frank\, and Silvestre Revueltas. \nCelebrating Latin America’s rich musical and dance traditions\, the concert will feature elegant Cuban danzón in Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 2\, energetic tango in Daniel Freiberg’s Historias de Flores y Tangos\, and Andean folk influences in Gabriela Lena Frank’s Escaramuza. Silvestre Revueltas’s Sensemayá will pulse with Afro-Caribbean rhythms and Alberto Ginastera’s Four Dances from Estancia will evoke the powerful malambo dance of Argentina’s pampas. \n\n\n\nOn the Program\n\nArturo Márquez\nDanzón No. 2\nConcierto de Otoño  \nDaniel Freiberg\nHistorias de Flores y Tangos  \nGabriela Lena Frank\nEscaramuza  \nSilvestre Revueltas\nSensemayá  \nAlberto Ginastera\nFour Dances from Estancia  \n \n\n \n\nFeatured Performers\nNew Haven Symphony Orchestra\nPerry So\, conductor & music director\nPacho Flores\, trumpet \nPacho Flores will make his NHSO debut performing two concertos written especially for him by Arturo Márquez and Daniel Freiberg\, showcasing his extraordinary technical command and expressive artistry. Flores has established himself as one of the foremost trumpeters of his generation. He was awarded First Prize in the “Maurice André” International Trumpet Competition\, the most prestigious competition of its kind\, along with top prizes in the Philip Jones and Cittá di Porcia competitions. A product of Venezuela’s renowned El Sistema music program\, Flores has performed as a soloist with leading orchestras worldwide\, including the NHK Orchestra of Japan\, the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra\, and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Kiev. \nFlores has received multiple Latin GRAMMY nominations for his albums\, which feature collaborations with major composers such as Arturo Márquez\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Roberto Sierra\, Efraín Oscher\, Christian Lindberg\, and Daniel Freiberg\, and performances with renowned orchestras including the Konzerthaus Orchester Berlin\, Arctic Philharmonic\, Real Filharmonía de Galicia\, and Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería. \n \n \n\nFrom Music Director Perry So\n“We begin our summer season with a blockbuster concert constructed from the powerful symphonic repertoire of our closest geographical neighbors – Latin America. Dance music is everywhere on the program\, as you would imagine\, but the essence of this music is how carefully poised it is between dance on the one hand and impeccable artistry on the other\, with the pages of these scores filled with complex historical and social undercurrents. I am always initially drawn into this music by the driving rhythms and soaring melodies but find myself digging deeper and deeper into their engagement with some of the weightiest chapters of our shared hemispheric history. We are joined in the second half by my friend and hermano\, Pacho Flores\, the trumpet virtuoso with the most beautiful\, heartbreaking tone I know\, and he brings with him two concertos written especially for him to close this season.” \n\n  \n\n\nConcert Sponsors\n  \n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n  \n\n \n\n

NHSO proudly welcomes triple-Grammy nominee Wu Man – the world’s foremost pipa soloist – to serve as a “wordless narrator” on Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Du Yun’s extraordinary and unusual Ears of the Book. \n\nMusic Director Perry So says\, “Our program is a kind of ‘translational adventure‘ – all three pieces take an idea from one realm and transform it into a new idiom where it feels entirely natural. The new Pipa concerto by Du Yun takes the sounds and musical gestures of traditional Chinese opera and gives them to the symphony orchestra to evoke that world that is quickly receding into memory. Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade is one of the greatest of orchestral showpieces and needs no introduction\, only to say that his immediate inspiration was visual rather than literary\, and all resemblances to The Tale of Sinbad’s Ship is purely coincidental! Unsuk Chin wrote “subito con forza” for a Beethoven birthday bash that never happened in 2020\, and takes a violent gesture from Beethoven’a Coriolan Overture and spins a cobweb of magical music in the shards of that initial impact.” \n\n  \n  \n\n\nConcert Sponsors\n \n\n\nThis concert is presented as part of Connecticut Orchestra Month\, a statewide celebration of the vibrant orchestral scene across Connecticut. The Ordering of Moses was never forgotten – church choirs\, community groups and others have kept the piece in our ears – but the first performance at Carnegie was only in 2014\, and the British premiere in 2022. What remarkable sound worlds are contained in the piece: lush late-Romanticism with echoes of Wagner and Elgar\, but as a context for the immediacy of the African-American spiritual that sounds stark and timeless. The sound of actual chains being pulled emanate from the orchestra against harmonies that dissolve into suggestions of near-Eastern scales. All in the service of the story and the emotion contained at the core of the work – a young Moses discovering his calling to lead his people out of slavery\, perhaps the most eloquent musical cry against oppression in the American tradition.” \n\n  \n  \n\n\nConcert Sponsors\n  \n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n \n \n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n \n \n\nFree Pre-Concert Events\nInterested to learn more about “The Ordering of Moses?” Click here to learn more about the free\, pre-concert events and conversations taking place around Greater New Haven prior to this performance. \nThere will also be a free\, pre-concert talk hosted by organist Nathaniel Gumbs at 2PM on the first floor of Woolsey Hall on Sunday\, February 9. SUMMARY:Clara & Johannes
DESCRIPTION:Considering tickets to more than one concert this season? Choose 3 concerts and you will save 20% on tickets. Click here to subscribe today.  \n\n\n\nOn the Program\n\nClara Wieck (Schumann)\nPiano Concerto in A minor\, op. 7\n \nJohannes Brahms\nSymphony No. 4 \nCharles Ives\nThree Places in New England \n\n \n\nFeatured Performers\nNew Haven Symphony Orchestra\nPerry So\, Conductor & Music Director\nInna Faliks\, piano \nThe remarkable Ukrainian-born pianist Inna Faliks has established herself as one of the most communicative\, and poetic artists of her generation. Since her teenage debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra\, she has performed thousands of recitals and concerts throughout the world in major concert halls and with renowned orchestras and conductors including Leonard Slatkin\, Keith Lockhart\, Daniel Meyer\, Victor Yampolsky\, Robert Moody\, and Dmitry Sitkovetsky. Her memoir\, Weight In the Fingertips was published by Globe Pequot in 2023 receiving outstanding reviews. In 2024 she premieredClarice Assad’s Lilith Concerto amd released her latest CD: Manuscripts Don’t Burn.  \n \n \n\nAbout this Performance\nClara Schumann and Johannes Brahms shared a deep and enduring friendship that greatly influenced their music. Clara\, a brilliant pianist and composer\, was a close confidante and mentor for Brahms. Their relationship\, rooted in mutual respect and admiration\, inspired some of the most beautiful and heartfelt compositions in classical music. This concert celebrates their unique bond and the timeless music born from it. \nThe program will also feature Connecticut’s official composer\, Charles Ives\, in honor of his 125th Birthday Anniversary! Born in Danbury in 1874\, Ives attended Yale University and worked in the insurance industry\, while also becoming one of the most influential composers in American history. Three Places in New England aims to paint a picture of American ideals\, lifestyle and patriotism at the turn of the 20th century by musically visiting Boston Commons; Redding\, Connecticut; and Stockbridge\, Mass. \nFrom Music Director Perry So: \n“Symphonic music came to New Haven through immigrants over a century ago\, and central European musicians have played a major part of the history of the NHSO\, the fourth oldest symphony orchestra in the country. While technically European at its source\, the works of composers such as Brahms\, Tchaikovsky and Dvorak almost immediately crossed the Atlantic and flourished on the music stands of the NHSO and our peers. Brahms’ fourth and final symphony is such a work — thoroughly central European at its birth but almost immediately finding a home on these shores. In this program we explore Clara Schumann’s piano concerto\, a foundational work of the history of the piano that has been unjustly forgotten until recently. We will also celebrate the 150th birthday of Connecticut’s state composer\, Charles Ives\, the great maverick innovator of American music\, who walked the streets of New Haven as a young man\, and attended countless NHSO concerts in those formative years.” \n\n  \n\n\nConcert Sponsors\n

This piece has taken generations through its harrowing journey in oppressive darkness\, holding out false promises of an Eden that never materializes\, until a voice pulls us back from the brink and shows us the way out of despair through community and through art. I love that this piece brings solace in bereavement at the same moment that it calls for a radical egalitarianism in art. It says to us: “since we are equally human in joy and sadness\, together let’s choose the joy that reminds us how much we all share.” \n  \n\n\nConcert Sponsors\n
