DESCRIPTION:Please note that this concert was postponed to June 2022.\n\nGather family and friends\, pack a picnic\, and join the NHSO and International Festival of Arts and Ideas in celebrating our healthcare heroes\, first responders\, and essential workers. This free\, outdoor concert will mark the NHSO’s first concert with the full orchestra since March 2020. \nConducted by NHSO music director Alasdair Neale\, the concert will feature Tony Award-winning star of stage and screen Brian Stokes Mitchell and soprano Harolyn Blackwell. \n\nConcert Highlights will include:\n\nPowerhouse vocals of Stokes and Blackwell on songs including The Impossible Dream\, Feelin’ Good\, He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands\, “Somewhere” from West Side Story\, “Wheels of a Dream” from Ragtime\, and “It Ain’t Necessarily So” from Porgy & Bess\n\nExcerpts from Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5\, Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring\, and Valerie Coleman’s Fanfare for Uncommon Times.\nGuest performances by cellist Johnathan Moore\nYOU singing in an all-city performance of Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing with the entire audience on the green and a special roster of hometown heroes in an onstage choir.\n\nThis concert is the centerpiece of the International Festival of Arts & Ideas and NHSO “Arts for Labor” Weekend Festival September 4 and 5. This end-of-summer celebration features two days of programming honoring the workers who carried us through the pandemic. \n\nAbout Brian Stokes Mitchell\nBrian Stokes Mitchell emerged early on in the pandemic as a Covid-19 survivor and champion of healthcare heroes and frontline workers. In April 2020\, after the 7pm tribute to the health care workers in Manhattan\, Stokes would lean out his apartment window and sing with his legendary booming voice to give thanks. Since then\, he has dedicated numerous performances to frontline workers and has advocated tirelessly for the arts industry\, which has been devastated by shuttered venues and restrictions on large gatherings. \nDubbed “the last leading man” by The New York Times\, Tony Award-winner Brian Stokes Mitchell has enjoyed a career that spans Broadway\, television\, film\, and concert appearances with the country’s finest conductors and orchestras. \nHe received Tony\, Drama Desk\, and Outer Critics Circle awards for his star turn in Kiss Me\, Kate. He also gave Tony-nominated performances in Man of La Mancha\, August Wilson’s King Hedley II\, and Ragtime. Other notable Broadway shows include Kiss of the Spider Woman\, Jelly’s Last Jam\, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown and Shuffle Along. In 2016 he was awarded his second Tony Award\, the prestigious Isabelle Stevenson Tony for his charitable work with The Actors Fund. DESCRIPTION:Join the NHSO Brass Quintet as they team up with Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo! This free\, outdoor Family Series will introduce children to the connections between music and their favorite stories and animals. \nPairing live animals and animal artifacts from the Zoo with vibrant performances by NHSO musicians\, this exciting musical experience will encourage discovery and engage the imagination. \nProgram: \n“Flight of the Bumblebee\,” by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov\nExcerpts from The Carnival of the Animals\, by Camille Saint-Saëns\nThe Race\, by Gwyneth Walker \n\nThis program has additional performances. Click here to view all of the dates\, times\, and locations available. \n\n\n\nWhat to Expect\n\nA concert of instrumental music by two trumpets\, a horn\, a trombone\, and a tuba.\nThe Race is an exciting musical adaptation of the classic fable\, “The Tortoise and the Hare\,” and is performed with narration.\nA display of small\, live animals and animal artifacts by members of The Beardsley Zoo staff will be available beginning at 2:00pm and will be included in the show.\nThe concert will be approximately 1 hour long. \nAudience members of all ages are welcome but the concert will be best experienced by children ages 3-9.\nThis is an informal event. Lee is Director of Equity\, Belonging and Student Life at the Yale University School of Music after nine years as Associate Professor of Voice and Opera at the University of Nevada\, Reno. With degrees from the University of Connecticut\, The Juilliard School\, and Florida State University\, he has made a career as a classical vocalist in opera\, oratorio\, recital\, and liturgical music. Dr. Lee is a featured soloist on a recording of works by Pulitzer Prize winning composer\, George Walker on Albany Records singing musical settings of the Walt Whitman poem “When lilacs last in dooryard bloomed\,” a poem written as an elegy to Abraham Lincoln after his assassination. His also currently serves as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra\, and has served as Associate Conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic\, Conducting Fellow of the Los Angeles Philharmonic\, Artistic Collaborator of the Orquesta Sinfónica del Principado de Asturias in Spain\, and on the conducting faculty of the Manhattan School of Music. When he was a student at Yale University he founded an orchestra and led the undergraduate opera company\, and went on to train as a conductor initially under James Sinclair and subsequently with Gustav Meier at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore.
