Williamson will be the featured soloist on our upcoming concerts\, July 4th on the Wharf. \nThis program will explore Margaret Bonds’s Three Dream Portraits and Florence Price’s Hymn to The Dark Virgin\, which Williamson will perform at the July 4th weekend concerts. Watch on the NHSO’s YouTube channel or FaceBook page. \nWatch YouTube Premiere\n\nAbout Lisa Williamson\n\nDescribed by the Washington Post as “silvery of voice” and “a showstopper” for her recent performances with Washington National Opera as The Rose in The Little Prince and The Flamingo in the world premiere of Jeanine Tesori’s The Lion\, the Unicorn and Me\, soprano Lisa Williamson is a versatile singer who has forged a diverse career that has taken her around the world from Muscat\, Oman to the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall to the Indianapolis Brickyard. \nIn a dynamic 2018-19 season she created the role of Bessie Coleman\, the first Black American female pilot\, in the world-premiere production of Douglas Buchanan and Caitlin Vincent’s Sackler Prize-Winning opera Bessie and Ma\, returned to the New Haven Symphony for the stratospheric soprano solos in Carmina Burana\, and showed off her comedic timing as Amalia in She Loves Me at the Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts with UConn Opera. In the 2017-18 season she joined the Hartford Symphony Orchestra for Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915 and Carmina Burana\, returned to The Glimmerglass Festival to sing The Rose in The Little Prince and sang title roles in Cendrillon and Suor Angelica at UConn Opera. Other recent highlights include her debut with Portland Opera in a double bill of David Lang’s the difficulty of crossing a field and the little match girl passion\, singing Virginia Creeper and the soprano soloist\, Laurie in The Tender Land with Hartford Opera Theater in partnership with the American School for the Deaf in a production in she also communicated using American Sign Language\,  Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra Pops\, Die Fledermaus and La Bohème (Opera Theater of Connecticut)\, the little match girl passion (The Glimmerglass Festival)\, The Music Man (Royal Opera House\, Muscat in Oman)\, and Wonderful Town (Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi in Milan\, Italy). \n\n\nMs. Williamson is a dedicated recitalist with a passion for American repertoire\, from Songbook to art song\, with a special emphasis on works by women and African-American composers. She was a Marc and Eva Stern Fellow at the United States’ premiere art song festival\, Songfest\, where she worked with composers Jake Heggie\, Libby Larsen\, and John Musto\, and presented the world premiere of James Primosh’s song “Shadow Memory.” In 2013 she performed in The Song Continues with Marilyn Horne\, the Weill Music Institute’s Professional Training Program at Carnegie Hall and in 2017 she curated and presented a solo recital of art song with text by Harlem Renaissance writers at The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale in collaboration with the exhibit\, “Gather Out of Star-Dust.” Williamson is a founding member of the Bassless Trio\, a first-of-its-kind chamber ensemble made up of soprano voice\, cello\, and saxophone. The group made its debut in 2018\, premiering six new works written for them and has performed throughout Connecticut and New York.  \nFrom 2005-2010\, Ms. Williamson was the vocal soloist with The United States Coast Guard Band. In her more than two hundred performances with the Coast Guard Band she performed in thirty-four states in the U.S. and throughout Japan singing a variety of repertoire from opera arias to the American Songbook\, and twice performing the National Anthem at the Indianapolis 500 for live audiences of over 400\,000 and millions on television worldwide.  \n\n\nMs. Williamson is a candidate for a Doctor of Musical Arts at UConn\, and also holds a Master of Music in voice from the Yale School of Music\, a Performer’s Certificate from UConn\, and a Bachelor of Music in voice performance from the Peabody Conservatory of Music at Johns Hopkins University. The daughter of premiere military band musicians\, Lisa is a native of Alexandria\, Virginia. She now makes her home in Connecticut with her husband\, Commander Adam Williamson\, the director of the United States Coast Guard Band\, and their son.

Please join us for this FREE learning opportunity! \n\nLed by Alasdair Neale\, the NHSO tackles two titans of the Classical repertoire: Johannes Brahms and Felix Mendelssohn. The concert will open with Grammy-Award winning and Pulitzer Prize nominated composer Joan Tower’s take on the popular Fanfare for the Common Man. The NHSO also introduces violin virtuoso Alexi Kenney\, recipient of the 2016 Avery Fisher Career Grant who the NY Times calls “a talent to watch. \n\nGuest Speaker:\nVincent LaMonica; bassoonist\, composer\, conductor\, educator \nVincent enjoys a varied performance career in orchestras\, chamber ensembles\, wind ensembles\, and even British-style brass bands.  He is currently a member of the Doclé Reed Quintet\, made up of graduated Master’s students from the Bienen School of Music.  He has appeared as a soloist with large ensembles on six occassions\, most recently including Dana Wilson’s Avatar Concerto for amplified bassoon and chamber wind ensemble at Northwestern University.  Vincent serves as a substitute bassoonist and contrabassoonist with the Symphony Orchestras of Springfield (MA)\, Portland (ME)\, Albany (NY)\, Kenosha (WI)\, and South Bend (IN)\, the Orchestra of Indian Hill (Littleton\, MA) and the Rhode Island Philharmonic. \nAs an advocate of new music\, Vincent has commissioned and premiered a diverse array of works as a soloist\, chamber musician\, and in large ensembles.  In April of 2017\, Vincent presented a recital of music by living American composers\, titled “The Contemporary American Bassoonist\,” and he plans to pursue similar projects.  Through the Doclé Reed Quintet\, Vincent is continuing this work by commissioning new reed quintet repertoire from up-and-coming composers. \nVincent recently complete the Master’s program at the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University (Evanston\, IL)\, where he studied under the tutelage of David McGill. His previous teachers have included Nancy Goeres\, Margaret Phillips\, Ronald Haroutunian\, Rebecca Eldredge\, and Janet Polk.

Please join us for this FREE learning opportunity! \n\nDvorak & Price\nThursday\, March 5 \nFlorence Price\, the first African American female composer to have a symphonic work performed by a major national orchestra\, is often compared musically to Dvořák\, who also employed sweeping melodies and sampled from African American and Native American music traditions. Along with Rossini’s William Tell Overture\, this aesthetically beautiful concert experience will be underscored by a reexamining of our classical music roots. \nProgram:\nDVORAK Cello Concerto\nPRICE Symphony No. 1\nROSSINI William Tell Overture \nFeaturing:\nAlasdair Neale music director\nOliver Herbert cello \n\nGuest Speaker: Kelsee Vandervall\, NHSO Harmony Fellow and Cellist/Arranger \nKelsee Vandervall is a Chicago based cellist\, teacher and arranger. A versatile musician\, she can be seen doing everything from recording sessions to orchestral performances. \nKelsee received a dual Master’s of Music Degree in Cello Performance and Chamber Music at the University of Michigan in 2018\, studying with Anthony Elliott. She was a awarded a fellowship for her 2 years\, having the opportunity to train with world-renown faculty and artists such as the Calidore and Takács string quartet. \nMost recently\, Kelsee was awarded the Harmony Fellowship with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra starting in their 125th season (2018). She can also be seen performing with groups such as the River Raisin Ragtime Revue\, ecletic band Glad Rags\, and on episodes of the FOX show Empire. Kelsee spent part of 2018 performing with J. Cole on his KOD tour. \nAn alum of Columbia College Chicago\, Kelsee spent 4 years under the instruction of Jill Kaeding and had the opportunity to perform with many artists including; Grammy award winning artist Paula Cole\, Todd Rundgren\, smooth jazz artist Brian Culbertson\, gypsy jazz guitarist Samuel Strouk\, Charlie Sexton\, record with singer/ songwriter Yoshi Breen\, guitarist Kevin Eubanks and Darmon Meader. Previous teachers include Jocelyn Butler of the New Music School and Lincoln Smelser\, faculty of Northern Illinois University.

Please join us for this FREE learning opportunity! \n\nDavid Southorn first dazzled New Haven audiences in his role as Concertmaster with the 2018 Opening Night performance of Scheherezade. He steps into the spotlight again for two dramatic works for solo violin and orchestra by Arvo Pärt and Aaron Kernis. This celebration of the orchestra’s string family will also pay homage to beloved masterworks by Mozart and Haydn. \n\nGuest Speaker:\nAmy Christman\, Music Department Chair at Educational Center for the Arts \nMusic educator\, choral conductor\, and pianist\, Amy Lachance Christman is a passionate advocate for the transformative power of arts education. As Chair of the ACES ECA Music Department\, Amy collaborates with teaching artists in music\, theater\, creative writing\, visual art\, and dance to create and sustain programming that provides opportunities for young artists to develop their individual artistic voice. Amy’s career in education is fueled by a belief in the extraordinary capacity of young people to imagine what could be. Her work is dedicated to the cultivation of vibrant music education communities which nurture skill in creativity\, communication\, critical thinking\, and collaboration. Amy extends this work as a collaborative pianist\, as a guest lecturer for the New Haven Symphony Orchestra\, offering regular Prelude Concert Talks since 2016\, and through contributions to the field of music education\, including a workshop on Improvisation in the Choral Classroom for the 2019 CT Music Educators’ In-Service Conference. Amy earned a Master of Arts Degree in Philosophy and Education at Teachers College Columbia University\, with a focus on aesthetic philosophy and its implication for arts education with Maxine Greene and David Hanson. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree at the Eastman School of Music under the mentorship of Dr. Donna Brink Fox\, William Weinert\, and Vincent Lenti.

This year the Symphony will be joined by New Haven’s Heritage Chorale in a concert that blends holiday classics with new seasonal favorites. \n\nChelsea Tipton\nAs a sought after guest conductor\, Chelsea has appeared with numerous major orchestras in the U.S.\, including Cleveland\, Chicago\, Detroit\, Pittsburgh\, Houston\, Atlanta\, Indianapolis\, New Jersey\, Nashville\, Hilton Head\, and San Antonio\, as well as the Brooklyn\, Louisiana\, and Rochester Philharmonics\, and the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana (Palermo) among others.  During the summer of 2011 he was part of an extensive European tour with pop artist Sting that took him to 15 countries and to work with 19 different European orchestras.  He prepared the orchestras for the concerts and performed with Sting in concert in the Canary Islands\, Granada\, and Cap Roig Spain.  Chelsea recently conducted the Sphinx Competition Showcase gala concert at Carnegie Hall\, which was the culmination of a ten city tour with that orchestra.  He was a last minute replacement for Robert Spano to conduct an all-Gershwin season finale with the Brooklyn Philharmonic.  The New York Times applauded Tipton for “leading sweeping and vibrant performances” of Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris. \nJonathan Q. Berryman\nJonathan Q. Berryman\, Founder and Director of New Haven’s Heritage Chorale\, graduated with honors from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. He continued his education at Yale University where he earned a Master of Music Degree in Choral Conducting and a Certificate in Sacred Music Studies from the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. While at Yale\, Mr. Berryman served as Assistant Conductor of the Yale Camerata. In addition to directing The Heritage Chorale of New Haven\, Mr. Berryman teaches Choral Music at Betsy Ross Arts Magnet School and is Minister of Music at Messiah Baptist Church in Bridgeport\, CT. Mr. Berryman is the recipient of The Arts Council of Greater New Haven 2005 Award for Creative Collaboration and the Phenomenal Man Award from the New Haven Alumni Chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity\, Inc.

Please join us for this FREE learning opportunity! \n\nBeethoven & Adams\nNovember 14 \nA pillar of the classical repertoire\, Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony is often considered to be one his “happiest” works\, whose brilliant energy will be matched with the opening Chairman Dances by legendary living composer John Adams. One of the most sought-after soloists in his generation\, pianist Orion Weiss has performed with major American orchestras including the Chicago Symphony\, Boston Symphony\, Los Angeles Philharmonic\, and New York Philharmonic. \n\nMichael Yaffe has been associate dean of the Yale School of Music since 2006.  At Yale\, he has been responsible for the development of the Music in Schools Initiative\, a program designed to provide training for graduate students in community engagement and to provide New Haven public schools with teaching artists and other collaborative programs.  In the past two years\, Mr. Yaffe has also led the development of the Morse Summer Music Academy\, a comprehensive summer music program for urban youth from New Haven. In addition\, he is responsible for the development of technology and dissemination programs at Yale\, including distance learning\, streaming\, website development\, and tools for students and faculty. \nFrom 1986 to 2006\, Mr. Yaffe was executive director of The Hartt School of the University of Hartford and director of its Community Division. During his tenure at the Hartt Community Division\, he increased its student population from 1\,000 to 2\,800 students. Beyond the 100 part-time faculty members\, Mr. Yaffe created 30 full-time teaching positions with benefits. He initiated the Fund for Access to provide financial aid and to make the programs of the Community Division available to students with limited means. Mr. Yaffe enhanced programs for small and large ensembles\, including chamber music\, youth orchestra\, wind ensemble\, and children’s choir.  He led the transfer of the School of the Hartford Ballet to Hartt\, creating a new department of dance.  To maintain a connection with the classroom\, he taught the music history component of the High School Performer’s Certificate Program.

Glodo is Assistant to the Associate Dean at the Yale School of Music (2016 – present). She provides support for all of the Associate Dean’s activities\, including the Music in Schools Initiative\, and she was responsible for the initial research and drafting in preparation for the 2017 Symposium on Music in Schools. After the symposium\, she developed participants’ ideas into a cohesive document and was the primary writer and editor of the resulting Declaration on Equity in Music for City Students (2018). The NHSO and Christ Church Choir celebrate the holiday season with Handel’s beloved vocal masterpiece\, Messiah.\n \n\nGuest Speaker: Marissa Moore \nDr. Marissa Glynias Moore is an ethnomusicologist whose interests include voice studies\, the racialization of sound\, and the role that music plays in American religious life. Her work examines the ethics of cross-cultural musicking\, focusing on how contemporary religious Americans encounter and engage “the other” through vocal performance. Her dissertation explored how the globalization of Christianity has influenced mainline Protestant worship in the United States through the construction and practice of a repertoire of non-Western Christian music known as “global song\,” using a varied methodology of source-studies\, interviews\, and multi-sited ethnography. Currently\, Dr. Moore is investigating the performative and political role that racialized sound plays in the vocal production of white singers\, especially in the performance of Negro spirituals. She holds a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Yale (2018)\, and her publications can be found in the Yale Journal of Music and Religion and The Hymn. \nIn addition to her scholarly pursuits\, Dr. Moore is invested in bridging the gap between the academy and the public sphere. She has worked with the New Haven Symphony and the Center for Traditional Music and Dance in New York City on projects ranging from podcasts to educational initiatives\, and enjoys sharing her research in popular press venues as well as scholarly publications. Outside of the classroom\, Dr. Moore is an avid flutist and early-stage student of Brazilian choro music\, as well as a singer and songwriter.

Please join us for this FREE learning opportunity! \n\nBeethoven!\nNovember 29\, 2018\nExplore Beethoven’s genius in an all-Beethoven program featuring the heroic Symphony No. 3 and innovative and groundbreaking Piano Concerto No. 4 with Yale Faculty member\, pianist Boris Berman. \n\nGuest Speaker:\nAmy Christman\, Music Department Chair at Educational Center for the Arts \nA native of Sandown\, New Hampshire\, Amy has performed as a pianist\, choral artist\, and conductor\, in New Hampshire\, New York\, and Connecticut. Amy earned a BM magna cum laude from the Eastman School of Music\, where she studied piano with Vincent Lenti and Tony Caramia\, served as the New York State President of NYSSMA\, and was an inaugural participant in the Eastman School’s innovative Arts Leadership Program. Amy has worked as a teaching artist with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra\, the Stamford Symphony Orchestra\, and the Boston Music Education Collaborative. Amy is active as an accompanist\, choral conductor\, and adjudicator in the New Haven area\, and has performed as an accompanist for ensemble and soloists\, including the University of Bridgeport University Singers\, Cheshire Community Chorus\, and Greenwich Children’s Honor Choir. Amy served as the Director of Choral Music at Joel Barlow High School in Redding\, CT for nine years\, where she taught AP Music Theory and conducted all choral ensembles\, which performed extensively in the Northeast\, earning superior ratings at festivals and invitations to perform at Carnegie Hall and Riverside Cathedral in New York City. Amy was selected as the District Teacher of the Year in 2005 and represented Joel Barlow at the Harvard Graduate School of Education Institute Redesigning the American High School. Amy has studied conducting with William Weinhert\, Donald Hunsberger\, Richard Westenburg\, Doreen Rao at the Hartt School of Music\, and James Jordan at Westminster Choir College. In May 2005 Amy completed her Master of Arts degree at Teachers College Columbia University in Philosophy and Education\, working intensively with David Hanson and Maxine Greene to explore the field of aesthetic philosophy and its implications for arts education.

Join two Yale University professors discuss the old Latin text and its musical setting to give you a deeper understanding of this monumental work. \n\n \nPhilippa Ovenden\nOriginally from the Orkney Islands in Scotland\, Pippa Ovenden (2015) is a PhD student in Music History. She was an undergraduate at the Royal Academy of Music in London (RAM)\, during which time she spent a year as an ERASMUS exchange student at the University of the Arts in Berlin. She graduated from the RAM in 2013 with the Roy Burcher Prize for highest ranking final recital in Historical Performance. She holds an MMus from King’s College London\, where she wrote her Master’s thesis\, supervised by Emma Dillon\, on the relationship between education\, spirituality\, and music in a late fifteenth-century German-speaking Dominican convent. Her research interests lie in 14th- and early 15th-century French and Italian song\, instrumental music\, and improvisation. Pippa enjoys performing music of a variety of genres from Bach Cantatas to experimental pop on recorders and keyboards\, both historical and electric.\n \n  \n \nAnders Winroth\nProfessor Winroth specializes in the history  of medieval Europe\, especially religious\, intellectual and legal history as well as the Viking Age. He teaches both halves of the survey lecture course in medieval history\, seminars in religious\, legal\, intellectual\, and Scandinavian history.  His new book\, The Conversion of Scandinavia: Vikings\, Merchants\, and Missionaries in the Remaking of Northern Europe\, argues for a radically new interpretation of the conversion of Scandinavia from paganism to Christianity in the early Middle Ages (Yale Press\, December 2011). \nIn 2003\, Winroth was named a MacArthur Fellow by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation\, which honors individuals for the originality and creativity of their work and the potential to do more in the future. Winroth is credited with showing that manuscripts previously thought to be abbreviations of the standard text are actually early versions of the text. “This painstaking analysis would have been impossible absent his mastery of canon law\, command of medieval Latin\, and aptitude for paleographic reconstruction of materials that exist primarily in the form of unedited medieval manuscripts\,” the MacArthur Foundation stated. “By reversing the chronology of the earliest publications in canon law\, Winroth opens new avenues for interpreting its origins and development.” \nWinroth received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1996 and was the Sir James Knott Research Fellow at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne 1996-1998. He joined the Yale faculty as an assistant professor in 1998\, was promoted to associate professor in 2003 and to full professor in 2004. He was the chair of the Medieval Studies Program 2005-2007.

Join newly-appointed Concertmaster David Southorn as well as two NHSO Harmony Fellows that play in the first and second violin sections. How do all of them communicate on stage? What is the role of the Concertmaster? What’s the difference between the first and second sections? Learn about our musicians’ backgrounds and ask them your own questions in this interactive event. \n\n\nViolinist David Southorn enjoys a versatile career as a chamber musician\, concertmaster and soloist. He is currently part of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s CMS II program as a member of the award-winning Amphion String Quartet\, and has collaborated with such distinguished musicians as David Shifrin\, Joseph Swensen\, Carter Brey\, Edgar Meyer\, Peter Wiley\, Paul Neubauer\, the Tokyo String Quartet as well as Ani and Ida Kavafian. Mr. Southorn currently serves as Concertmaster of the Delaware Symphony.  Additionally\, he has performed as a guest concertmaster with the Miami and New Haven Symphonies\, as well as with the Incheon Philharmonic in South Korea.  Mr. Southorn is a member of the New York Classical Players and LE TRAIN BLEU\, and is a substitute violinist with the New York Philharmonic. Mr. Southorn received a Bachelor of Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music\, a Master of Music and Artist Diploma from Yale University and a Professional Studies Certificate from the Manhattan School of Music. His teachers have included Ani Kavafian\, Glenn Dicterow\, Lisa Kim\, Ian Swensen\, Camilla Wicks and Wei He.\n\n\nJames Keene is a versatile soloist\, chamber musician\, orchestral violinist\, and music pedagogue. After attending Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan\, he received his B.M. from Rutgers University\, and later studied at San Francisco Conservatory. Starting in high school\, he has played solo\, chamber\, and orchestral performances for audiences throughout China\, Italy\, Spain\, Austria\, the Czech Republic\, Hungary\, Poland\, and the USA. Currently\, as founder of Classical Revolution NJ he schedules chamber music performances throughout the central NJ area. He travels frequently between the east and west coast for performances in the Bay Area. Also\, as a faculty member\nof Newark School of the Arts\, he instructs the Carollo Scholarship violin students there. His principal teachers have been Todd Phillips\, Carmit Zori\, Lenuta Ciulei\, and Wei-He. Most recently\, James placed 1st place Russel Johnson String Competition in Philadelphia and shared the Carnegie Hall main stage with Dionne Warwick.\n\n\n\nA violinist born and raised in New York City. Aurora Mendez began her musical studies at the age of four at the “Bronx House School of Music.” After moving to Chile with her family at the age of 15\, Aurora formed part of the National Youth Orchestra Foundation of Chile for 6 years serving as a member of the “Metropolitan Youth Orchestra” and the “National Youth Orchestra.” Along with her orchestral activities\, she taught extensively throughout Chile. Aurora has toured the world with various orchestras such as the Chilean National Youth Orchestra\, Youth Orchestra of The Americas\, and most recently\, the Schleswig Holstein Musik Festival. She has performed in master classes for Fernando Hasaj\, Rachel Barton-Pine\, Mayumi Seiler\, Lynn Blakeslee\, Andreas Witmanm\, the Latin American Quartet and many more. An active teacher\, Aurora formed part of the “Youth Orchestra of the Americas” Global Leadership program whose mission is to use music education as a vehicle for social change. She taught talented youth in Chile\, El Salvador and Chicago\, USA. She received her BA in Music Performance and Artist Diploma at Montclair State University.

Please join us for this FREE learning opportunity! \nBartok: Concerto for Orchestra \nGuest Speaker: Amy Christman\, Music Department Chair at Educational Center for the Arts \nEducational Center for the Arts’ Music Department Chair\, Amy Christman\, joins us to discuss her thoughts on the evening’s world-traveling musical program. \n\nA native of Sandown\, New Hampshire\, Amy has performed as a pianist\, choral artist\, and conductor\, in New Hampshire\, New York\, and Connecticut. Amy earned a BM magna cum laude from the Eastman School of Music\, where she studied piano with Vincent Lenti and Tony Caramia\, served as the New York State President of NYSSMA\, and was an inaugural participant in the Eastman School’s innovative Arts Leadership Program. Amy has worked as a teaching artist with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra\, the Stamford Symphony Orchestra\, and the Boston Music Education Collaborative. Amy is active as an accompanist\, choral conductor\, and adjudicator in the New Haven area\, and has performed as an accompanist for ensemble and soloists\, including the University of Bridgeport University Singers\, Cheshire Community Chorus\, and Greenwich Children’s Honor Choir. Amy served as the Director of Choral Music at Joel Barlow High School in Redding\, CT for nine years\, where she taught AP Music Theory and conducted all choral ensembles\, which performed extensively in the Northeast\, earning superior ratings at festivals and invitations to perform at Carnegie Hall and Riverside Cathedral in New York City. Amy was selected as the District Teacher of the Year in 2005 and represented Joel Barlow at the Harvard Graduate School of Education Institute Redesigning the American High School. Amy has studied conducting with William Weinhert\, Donald Hunsberger\, Richard Westenburg\, Doreen Rao at the Hartt School of Music\, and James Jordan at Westminster Choir College. Amado is also Director of Conducting Programs at the Atlantic Music Festival in Maine and Music Director of the Atlantic Classical Orchestra in Florida. In his twenty-two years as Music Director of Sun Valley\, Mr. Neale has propelled this festival to national status: it is now the largest privately funded free admission symphony in America. Mr. Neale’s appointment with the Marin Symphony followed 12 years as Associate Conductor of the San Francisco Symphony and Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra. Please join us for this FREE learning opportunity! \nHoliday Extravaganza\nGuest Speakers: Chelsea Tipton\, NHSO Principal Pops Conductor and Connor Bogart\, vocalist \nListen to Maestro Tipton and the evening’s featured vocalist\, fan favorite Connor Bogart\, discuss their thoughts on the musical program\, their life paths\, and how they will work together to bring the concert to life. \n\nAs a sought after guest conductor\, Maestro Chelsea Tipton has appeared with numerous major orchestras in the U.S.\, including Cleveland\, Chicago\, Detroit\, Pittsburgh\, Houston\, Atlanta\, Indianapolis\, New Jersey\, Nashville\, Hilton Head\, and San Antonio\, as well as the Brooklyn\, Louisiana\, and Rochester Philharmonics\, and the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana (Palermo) among others.  During the summer of 2011 he was part of an extensive European tour with pop artist Sting that took him to 15 countries and to work with 19 different European orchestras.  He prepared the orchestras for the concerts and performed with Sting in concert in the Canary Islands\, Granada\, and Cap Roig Spain.  Chelsea recently conducted the Sphinx Competition Showcase gala concert at Carnegie Hall\, which was the culmination of a ten city tour with that orchestra.  He was a last minute replacement for Robert Spano to conduct an all-Gershwin season finale with the Brooklyn Philharmonic.  The New York Times applauded Tipton for “leading sweeping and vibrant performances” of Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris. \n  \nA native of Northeast Ohio\, Connor decided to leave the violin behind to study vocal performance/opera at the prestigious Eastman School of Music in New York under the direction of Dr. Robert McIver. During his time at Eastman\, he also auditioned for\, and was subsequently accepted into the nationally ranked male a cappella group\, The University of Rochester Yellowjackets\, as a featured soloist. After recording several award winning albums with the group\, a love of singing without instruments took hold and in subsequent years led to executive producing future Yellowjacket albums and being a national finalist for the world famous vocal band Rockapella in their search for a new second tenor. Connor has been a featured soloist with the National Repertory Orchestra\, The Cleveland Pops\, The Symphony of Southeast Texas\, The Detroit Symphony Orchestra\, The Rochester Philharmonic\, The Toledo Symphony\, The Mansfield Symphony\, The New Haven Symphony\, The Akron Symphony\, The Fireland Symphony\, and the Cleveland Orchestra. Discover the symphony from a musicologist’s perspective! \n\nMichael Yaffe has been associate dean of the Yale School of Music since 2006.  At Yale\, he has been responsible for the development of the Music in Schools Initiative\, a program designed to provide training for graduate students in community engagement and to provide New Haven public schools with teaching artists and other collaborative programs.  In the past two years\, Mr. Yaffe has also led the development of the Morse Summer Music Academy\, a comprehensive summer music program for urban youth from New Haven. In addition\, he is responsible for the development of technology and dissemination programs at Yale\, including distance learning\, streaming\, website development\, and tools for students and faculty. \nFrom 1986 to 2006\, Mr. Yaffe was executive director of The Hartt School of the University of Hartford and director of its Community Division. During his tenure at the Hartt Community Division\, he increased its student population from 1\,000 to 2\,800 students. Beyond the 100 part-time faculty members\, Mr. Yaffe created 30 full-time teaching positions with benefits. He initiated the Fund for Access to provide financial aid and to make the programs of the Community Division available to students with limited means. Mr. Yaffe enhanced programs for small and large ensembles\, including chamber music\, youth orchestra\, wind ensemble\, and children’s choir.  He led the transfer of the School of the Hartford Ballet to Hartt\, creating a new department of dance.  To maintain a connection with the classroom\, he taught the music history component of the High School Performer’s Certificate Program. \n\nPrelude Sponsor \nYale School of Music

There will be directional signs. \nGuys and Dolls in Concert \nGuest Speaker: Wendy Morgan-Hunter\, director \nHave you ever wondered what goes through a director’s mind as s/he makes decisions on how to bring the story to life? Join Wendy Morgan-Hunter as she answers this question and gives an overview of the musical’s storyline. \n\nWendy Morgan Hunter is a Dramatic Coloratura Soprano/Mezzo\, director\, music director\, conductor\, and private voice teacher.  Wendy has performed opera\, oratorio\, jazz and musical theatre across the United States\, from New York’s Lincoln Center to Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre\, and in Europe.  Some of her favorites are Susannah in Figaro\, soprano soloist in the Rutter Requiem\, premiering new works including soloing with Stanford University in the premier of the Mass “The Armed Man”\, and singing the mezzo soprano role in Mozart’s Requiem with Viva La Musica in Europe. She has sung under the direction of Maestros Roger Wagner\, Paul Salamonovich\, Gary Unruh\, Raymond Harvey\, and Rodney Eichenberger. \nWendy has won many competitions and awards including the Marilyn Horne Endowment\, SCVA Vocal Competition\, and the Los Angeles Young Artist of the Future competition.  She has sung with numerous opera and theatre companies including San Jose Civic Light Opera\, Opera San Jose\, Sierra Chamber Opera and she created the role of The Witch in Stephen Sondheim’s first off-Broadway production of “Into The Woods” directed by Kevin Lima. She has collaborated with composers Morton Lauridsen and T. Paul Rosas and premiered their new works in concert. Mrs. Hunter has a CD available titled “The Standards of Love”. \n\nPrelude Sponsor
