DESCRIPTION:Meet the orchestra at the Young People’s Concert! This FREE\, interactive program designed for kids will show off all the cool sounds that an orchestra can make. \nExperience the story of chance\, discovery\, persistence\, and magic in this moving tale of a young girl’s journey to center stage with illustrations by Mo Willems (Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus) and music by Jessie Montgomery. \nThis concert is the perfect introduction to classical music for young audiences. \nWhat to Expect:\n— A 50-minute concert with no intermission. “Because” will be on the program\, as well as other pieces that show off the orchestra!\n— There will be a screen over the orchestra with fun visuals. \n\nDownload your free Teacher Resource Guide here:\nTeacher Resource Guide \nTickets:\nStudent tickets are $7 and chaperones are free. Click here to subscribe today.  \n\n\n\nOn the Program\n\nAntonín Dvořák Symphony No. 9\, “New World”\nCourtney Bryan Visual Rhythms\nWilliam Grant Still Lenox Avenue \n\n  \n\nFeatured Performers\nNew Haven Symphony Orchestra\nPerry So\, conductor & music director\nNew Haven Heritage Chorale \n  \n  \n\nAbout this Performance\n\nDvořák’s New World Symphony anchors this soulful celebration of cultural identity and belonging\, with works by Courtney Bryan and William Grant Still. \n\nAntonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9\, “From the New World” is one of the most beloved works in classical music—but its story is often told without naming the people who shaped it. During his time in America\, Dvořák found his deepest inspiration in the musical traditions of Black Americans and Indigenous peoples. Spirituals and Black church music guided his belief that America’s musical voice should grow from these roots. This program centers the traditions that influenced him. \nWilliam Grant Still’s music captures the rhythms\, depth\, and imagination of Black American life\, offering a vivid portrait of the cultural landscape that shaped generations of composers. \nThe concert also features Courtney Bryan\, the NHSO’s Composer-in-Residence and one of today’s most compelling American composers. Rooted in the sound of the Black church\, improvisation\, and contemporary classical writing\, Bryan’s Visual Rhythms invites listeners to hear music as movement\, color\, and spiritual expression. (Throughout this season and the next\, she will work closely with New Haven residents\, young musicians in the Young Composer Project\, and the NHSO in creating new artistic connections.) \nHeard alongside Bryan and Still\, Dvořák’s New World Symphony reveals the rich cultural lineage that captivated him. In this powerful orchestral tribute\, the New Haven Symphony Orchestra joins four international reggae vocalists to celebrate the life\, message\, and music of one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. \nThe songs in this “rockumentary” style musical journey through Marley’s life and legacy are performed by a live reggae band\, four guest vocalists\, and full symphony orchestra\, weaving together storytelling\, visuals\, and new orchestral arrangements of Marley’s most beloved music. Born in Clarendon\, Jamaica and now based in Toronto\, she has earned seven JUNO Award nominations for Reggae Recording of the Year. Her music blends classic roots reggae with soul\, gospel\, and R&B influences\, and her performances are known for their powerful messages of unity\, empowerment\, and social justice. \nSoji Joseph \nSoji Joseph is a reggae and soul vocalist known for his dynamic stage presence and rich baritone voice. His performances span reggae\, funk\, and Afro-Caribbean traditions\, and he has appeared in numerous international touring productions celebrating Caribbean music and culture. \nSteele \nReggae singer Steele has built a reputation as a compelling interpreter of classic roots reggae. DESCRIPTION:Meet the musicians of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra at Symphony Goes to the Zoo! This interactive program is designed for kids and families and explores how music and animals are connected.. \nThis program features Flight of the Bumblebee\, selections from Carnival of the Animals (including The Lion\, The Elephant\, Fossils\, and The Swan)\, and The Race\, a narrated retelling of the Tortoise and the Hare for brass quintet. Each piece highlights the different sounds\, colors\, and personalities of the brass section of the orchestra. \nWhat to Expect:\n\nA 45 minute concert with no intermission\nLive narration connecting music and storytelling\nA chance to see brass instruments and live animals up close\nA relaxed\, family-friendly environment\nThe program was designed with ages 3-8 in mind\, but anyone is welcome!\n\nTickets & Registration:\nYou must have admission to the Beardsley Zoo to watch this performance.
