SUMMARY:Rhapsody in Blue
DESCRIPTION:Experience one of the defining voices in American music in a program of music celebrating George Gershwin. This jazzy program will include such vocal solos from the American songbook as Someone To Watch Over Me\, S’ Wonderful\, and But Not For Me – as well as Gershwin’s virtuosic masterpiece\, Rhapsody in Blue. \nThis program will also feature America by Ray Leslee\, winner of the NHSO’s 2020 songwriting contest. \nThe Performers\nNew Haven Symphony Orchestra\nChelsea Tipton\, II\,Principal Pops Conductor\nClayton Stephenson\, guest pianist\nHaley Carlucci\, guest vocalist \n \nAmerican pianist Clayton Stephenson’s love for music is immediately apparent in his joyous charisma onstage\, expressive power\, and natural ease at the instrument. Hailed for “extraordinary narrative and poetic gifts” and interpretations that are “fresh\, incisive and characterfully alive” (Gramophone)\, he is committed to making an impact on the world through his music-making. \nGrowing up in New York City\, Clayton started piano lessons at age 7 and was accepted into the Julliard Outreach Music Advancement Program for underprivileged children the next year\, where he lingered to watch student recitals and fell in love with music. Fast-forward to today… he now studies in the Harvard-NEC Dual Degree Program\, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in economics at Harvard and a master’s degree in piano performance at the New England Conservatory. And his accolades along the way have been bountiful: in addition to being the first Black finalist at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2022\, he was named 2022 Gilmore Young Artist; 2017 U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts; Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist; Gheens Young Artist; and Young Scholar of the Lang Lang International Music Foundation. He also took home a jury discretionary award at the 2015 Cliburn International Junior Piano Competition and Festival. \n \nHaley Carlucci is thrilled to be making her debut with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra!  Haley made her Broadway debut as Maria in the 2009 Revival of West Side Story and has performed in professional regional theaters throughout the country. Some of her favorite roles include Jasmine in the US Regional Premier of Aladdin with the Tuacahn Center for the Arts\, Fiddler on the Roof\, Oklahoma\, Hairspray and The Mikado. She resides in Westport\, CT with her husband\, Matt\, and their beautiful baby girl Daphne. \n\nTickets\nBuy Tickets \nAdvisory: This concert has very limited seating still available. SUMMARY:Miller Conducts Schumann & Beethoven
DESCRIPTION:The Music\n\nLudwig van Beethoven\nPiano Concerto No. 2 \nRobert Schumann\nSymphony No. 2 \nValentin Silvestrov\nHymne \nEncore: Franz Lehar\n“Vilja’s Song” from the opera The Merry Widow \n\nThe Performers\nNew Haven Symphony Orchestra\nTania Miller\, Music Director Candidate\nChelsea Guo\, piano & soprano soloist \nCanadian Conductor Tania Miller has distinguished herself as a dynamic interpreter\, musician and innovator. Maestra Miller was Music Director of Canada’s Victoria Symphony for 14 years\, and was named Music Director Emerita for her commitment to the orchestra and community.  She has distinguished herself as a visionary leader and innovator with a deep commitment to contemporary repertoire and composers and has gained a national reputation as a highly effective advocate and communicator for the arts. An avid writer about music and the arts\, her writing has been featured in Symphony Magazine\, Toronto’s Globe and Mail\, and Better Humans. \nChelsea Guo has already attracted international attention as a pianist and soprano of remarkable gifts. Her dual artistry is featured in her 2021 debut recording\, “Chelsea Guo: Chopin in My Voice”\, which includes beloved Chopin solo repertoire\, along with two Chopin songs and one Rossini aria in which the artist accompanies herself. The inclusion of the Rossini aria is typical of many of the concert programs Chelsea offers\, which include both piano and vocal works\, enriching the opportunity for her audience to experience music in a broader context and displaying the influence that singers had on composers of their time. Gramophone Magazine included the recording in their Essential New Albums and Classic FM featured Chelsea for an entire week as a “Young Classical Star.” The album reached #7 on the Billboard Traditional Classical Chart and received five stars from BBC Music Magazine\, which wrote: “Here is a rare talent.” \n\nSponsors
