Named after Dixwell’s Monterery Cafe\, where legendary jazz performers including Duke Ellington\, Billie Holiday\, Charles Parker and John Coltrane graced the stage alongside local giants\, this first installment of the Renaissance Rhythms series brings together live music\, discussion\, and refined revelry to honor the captivating history of the Harlem Renaissance and the thriving jazz scene of New Haven. \nThe evening features performances by Cliff & Friends Trio\, and members of The Monk Family. Before we break in our dancing shoes\, one of the highlights of the night is a lively panel discussion about the past\, present and future of jazz. \nCome dressed in the style and glamour of the Harlem Renaissance\, and enjoy complimentary food and drinks alongside community and live music! \nFree admission. Click Here to View All Events in this Series.  \n\nWHEN BROADWAY WAS BLACK:\nFireside Chat with Author Caseen Gaines\nJoin us in a Community Conversation with Author Caseen Gaines at Possible Futures Bookstore. NHSO’s Principal Pops Conductor\, Chelsea Tipton II\, will facilitate a discussion on Gaines’ books\, When Broadway Was Black: The Triumphant Story of the All-Black Musical That Changed The World\, and Footnotes: The Black Artists Who Rewrote the Rules of the Great White Way\, which provide an in-depth look at Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake’s pioneering 1921 hit Shuffle Along\, an all-Black Broadway cast and crew that revolutionized the cultural scene of the 1920s. \nChelsea Tipton will thread the narrative of these books to the lives of featured composers and their works on NHSO’s Harlem Renaissance: Orchestral Voices concert: Sissle was a frequent houseguest in Margaret Bonds’ Chicago family home where cultural luminaries of the time gathered; William Grant-Still began sketching Afro-American Symphony after concluding a tour with Shuffle Along as a pit orchestra performer; and James P. Johnson\nDrums • Yamekraw \nCarlos Simon\nAmen \nThe Performers\n\nNew Haven Symphony Orchestra\nChelsea Tipton II\, Conductor & Principal Pops Director\nChristian Sands\, piano\nLisa Williamson\, soprano \n \nNew Haven native Christian Sands has five Grammy Award nominations under his belt\, including best Latin jazz piano solo. Wynton Marsalis named him a “jazz star of the future\,” and Sands spent six years as the pianist in Christian McBride’s trio and Inside Straight Quartet. Sands’ stylistic range includes stride piano\, swing\, be-bop\, progressive jazz\, fusion\, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban. In 2016\, he was signed to the prestigious Mack Avenue Records label. His debut CD\, “REACH\,” was released in 2017\, holding down the No. 1 spot on Billboard magazine’s Jazz Albums Chart for four weeks. This young Steinway Artis is taking his place as a leader and an emerging jazz force. \n \nDescribed by the Washington Post as “silvery of voice” and “a showstopper” for her recent performances with Washington National Opera as The Rose in The Little Prince and The Flamingo in the world premiere of Jeanine Tesori’s The Lion\, the Unicorn and Me\, soprano Lisa Williamson is a versatile singer who has forged a diverse career that has taken her around the world from Muscat\, Oman to the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall to the Indianapolis Brickyard. \n\n  \n  \n\n\nSponsors
