Announcing the 2012-2013 Season

Thursday • June 28, 2012

Maestro Boughton has crafted a dynamic program of Dramatic Duos: two sisters, two choral works, two pianists, two Walton pieces, and two Czech composers. Perhaps the sweetest treat for classical music audiences is Opening Night with sisters Ani and Ida Kavafian performing not one, but two works on the Woolsey stage. Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante, which continues Ani’s quest to perform all of Mozart’s violin concertos and the World Premiere of David Stock’s Taking Sides Concerto for Two Violins, Strings & Percussion a piece which the composer dedicates to our sister act.

Throughout the season audiences will find the powerful Carmina Burana; the epic Dream of Gerontius; and favorites by Beethoven, Dvořák, and Schumann. The NHSO’s commitment to contemporary American music continues with works by Christopher Theofanidis, John Corigliano, and multi-talented composer and hip-hop violinist Daniel Bernard Roumain.

From the Pops Series Jerry Steichen has planned a season of toe tapping pops classics performed by his handpicked artists and conductors. In October Jerry leads Broadway A to Z: Abba to Les Miz with Broadway stars Teri Dale Hansen and Nat Chandler. December brings the popular family favorite Holiday Extravaganza conducted by Matthew Savery with holiday classics including Sleigh Ride, The Christmas Song and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer complete with a tap-dancing solo by Mr. Savery! We round out the season in March with Hooray for Hollywood, a retrospective of movie music from classic films through to today’s blockbusters including music from James Bond, Spiderman, and Hedwig’s Theme from Harry Potter conducted by Chelsea Tipton II.

The NHSO is making it even easier to experience live music this season. First-time subscribers will SAVE 50% when they subscribe to any concert series! Subscriptions start as low as $52.50. Choose from a 7-concert series at Woolsey Hall, a 3-concert series at Shelton Intermediate or a 3-concert Pops Series in Hamden or Shelton. Also, this season the NHSO introduces KidTix, a program which allows children (ages 6-17) to attend concerts free of charge with the purchase of an adult ticket!
