The New Haven Symphony Orchestra(NHSO) will present works by, Dvorak, Sibelius & Lash on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at 7:30pm in Woolsey Hall. Led by NHSO music director William Boughton, the program will feature the culmination of the NHSO’s two year Lash/Voynich project with the world premiere of Hannah Lash’s Voynich Symphony. The program will also include Dvorak’s In Nature’s Realm, and Sibelius’ passionate Violin Concerto in D minor, featuring violinist Chad Hoopes.

NHSO music director William Boughton says, “The exciting and engaging two year journey through Hannah’s Voynich Symphony has come to its conclusion and we are now able to give birth to the complete work in our final concert of the Season. We have gotten to know its characteristics and personality through the individual movements but now the growth of the ‘baby’ is complete and we can take the complete musical and spiritual path of its journey into adulthood… We offer this wonderful Symphony to the world and hope it takes its place in the musical canon.”

The Lash/Voynich project is the New Haven Symphony Orchestra’s two-year collaboration with Hannah Lash, the NHSO’s Composer-in-Residence. The Voynich Symphony, is based on the mysterious Voynich Manuscript housed in Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Each of the movements are inspired by different images or themes that appear in the manuscript. The first two movements, “Herbal” and “Astronomical”, were premiered during the 2015-2016 season and the third movement, “Biological”, was premiered in September 2016. The project will culminate with the world premiere of the full work, including the fourth movement, “Cosmological”, on May 4.
