The group was founded through their love of bluegrass and the band the Punch Brothers. They have already gained recognition and praise for their exploration and strong execution of the challenging music\, as well as for their new original music. \nMost recently\, On the Trail had the honor of winning the 2022 Thomas Point Beach Band Competition after participating in 2021’s Telefunken Battle of the Bands at the Podunk Bluegrass Festival.  They also were selected as an Emerging Artist at Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival 2023. Johnson\nDrums • Yamekraw \nCarlos Simon\nAmen \nThe Performers\n\nNew Haven Symphony Orchestra\nChelsea Tipton II\, Conductor & Principal Pops Director\nChristian Sands\, piano\nLisa Williamson\, soprano \n \nNew Haven native Christian Sands has five Grammy Award nominations under his belt\, including best Latin jazz piano solo. Wynton Marsalis named him a “jazz star of the future\,” and Sands spent six years as the pianist in Christian McBride’s trio and Inside Straight Quartet. Sands’ stylistic range includes stride piano\, swing\, be-bop\, progressive jazz\, fusion\, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban. In 2016\, he was signed to the prestigious Mack Avenue Records label. His debut CD\, “REACH\,” was released in 2017\, holding down the No. 1 spot on Billboard magazine’s Jazz Albums Chart for four weeks. This 45-minute program is interactive and perfect for wiggly\, enthusiastic audience members. \nNHSO Family Concerts are fun\, interactive\, and designed for children ages 3-9. FREE for the whole family! \n\n \nCharlie Widmer is a multi-genre singer\, actor\, songwriter\, guitarist\, arranger\, and producer based in Connecticut. He received his Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Western Connecticut State University in 2016 and has been professionally singing and performing ever since. His singing credits include performances with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra\, Ivoryton Playhouse\, Playhouse on the Shore\, Salt Marsh Opera\, Opera Theater of Connecticut\, backup vocals for Josh Groban (Madison Square Garden/Radio City Musical Hall)\, Sarah Brightman (Radio City Music Hall)\, and 30 Seconds to Mars (City Winery NYC)\, and many others in both musical theater and opera alike. Charlie is also lead singer in Sub-Urban (Hip-Hop/Soul) and a singer/guitarist in On the Trail (Bluegrass). Ghana is known for its unique drums and percussion instruments. John Wesley Dankwa will join NHSO percussion as they unite traditional orchestra percussion with the distinctive percussion of Ghana.\n\nFeaturing:\nJohn Wesley Dankwa\, percussion\nNHSO percussion\n\n\n\n\nBefore the concert\, the NHSO offers an Instrument Petting Zoo where children can tap\, tickle\, and toot real orchestral instruments. Families are invited to stay for a healthy snack after the performance. New Haven Reads also provides free children’s books for all concert attendees.

The erhu is a two stringed-instrument played with a bow that is not only popular in China\, but in East Asian countries that are influenced by Chinese culture.\n\n\n\n\nFeaturing:\nKevin Chen\, erhu\nNHSO violinist and pianist \nBefore the concert\, the NHSO offers an Instrument Petting Zoo where children can tap\, tickle\, and toot real orchestral instruments.
