SUMMARY:Free Family Concert: Anansi the Spider
DESCRIPTION:The NHSO’s Free Family Series features exciting programs designed to delight children ages 3-8 and their families. These free\, interactive concerts will take place at kid-friendly venues across southern Connecticut between February – April\, creating a magical introduction to live music\, storytelling\, and education for young audiences. \n\nDiscover the beloved African folktale of Anansi the Spider through an interactive jazz fusion experience. Featuring original music by New Haven composer Tyler Goldchain and dynamic storytelling by artist and educator Isaac Bloodworth\, this program will bring together an incredible ensemble of composer Tyler Goldchain (keys/guitar)\, Jazz Haven artists Kenny Georges (saxophone) and Jesse Hameen\, II (drums)\, and NHSO musician Chris Johnson (bass). \n\n\nChildren will be captivated by the vibrant story of Anansi\, brought to life through live music\, narration\, visual art\, and playful audience participation. \n\nThis concert is sponsored by the International Association of New Haven and the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development.

SUMMARY:Free Fall Family Fun Concerts
DESCRIPTION: Join the New Haven Symphony Orchestra String Quintet and singer/host Charlie Widmer as we explore Harvest/Autumn music from around the world. This 45-minute program is interactive and perfect for wiggly\, enthusiastic audience members. NHSO Family Concerts are fun\, interactive\, and designed for children ages 3-9. FREE for the whole family! \nThis performance on October 29 will be part of the Stetson Library Harvest Festival. Enjoy music\, crafts\, and goody bag giveaways. Costumes are encouraged! \n\n \nCharlie Widmer is a multi-genre singer\, actor\, songwriter\, guitarist\, arranger\, and producer based in Connecticut. He received his Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Western Connecticut State University in 2016 and has been professionally singing and performing ever since. His singing credits include performances with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra\, Ivoryton Playhouse\, Playhouse on the Shore\, Salt Marsh Opera\, Opera Theater of Connecticut\, backup vocals for Josh Groban (Madison Square Garden/Radio City Musical Hall)\, Sarah Brightman (Radio City Music Hall)\, and 30 Seconds to Mars (City Winery NYC)\, and many others in both musical theater and opera alike. Charlie is also lead singer in Sub-Urban (Hip-Hop/Soul) and a singer/guitarist in On the Trail (Bluegrass). DESCRIPTION:Join the NHSO Brass Quintet as they team up with Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo! This free\, outdoor Family Series will introduce children to the connections between music and their favorite stories and animals. \nPairing live animals and animal artifacts from the Zoo with vibrant performances by NHSO musicians\, this exciting musical experience will encourage discovery and engage the imagination. \nProgram: \n“Flight of the Bumblebee\,” by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov\nExcerpts from The Carnival of the Animals\, by Camille Saint-Saëns\nThe Race\, by Gwyneth Walker \n\nThis program has additional performances. Click here to view all of the dates\, times\, and locations available. \n\n\n\nWhat to Expect\n\nA concert of instrumental music by two trumpets\, a horn\, a trombone\, and a tuba.\nThe Race is an exciting musical adaptation of the classic fable\, “The Tortoise and the Hare\,” and is performed with narration.\nA display of small\, live animals and animal artifacts by members of The Beardsley Zoo staff will be available beginning at 2:00pm and will be included in the show.\nThe concert will be approximately 1 hour long. \nAudience members of all ages are welcome but the concert will be best experienced by children ages 3-9.\nThis is an informal event. Children are welcome to move around throughout the show.\nSeating is not provided. DESCRIPTION:Featuring the NHSO Harmony Quartet: \nStephan Tieszen\, violin\nAurora Mendez\, violin\nEllen Higham\, viola\nKelsee Vandervall\, cello \nFlorence Price\, the first African American female composer to have a symphonic work performed by a major national orchestra\, is often compared musically to Antonin Dvorak\, who also employed sweeping melodies and sampled African American and Native American music. Join the New Haven Symphony Orchestra’s harmony Quartet for music featuring these two composers\, as well as works by Samuel Coleridge Taylor. Dive deeper into the effect of race on the history of classical music with an interactive audience talk-back during the concert. The Orchid Cafe will cater appetizers at a post-concert reception.
