Learn more about these cultural movements\, their historical impact\, and the Black artists that led the way through a series of free events around New Haven\, all culminating with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra’s Harlem Renaissance: Orchestral Voices concert on Saturday\, April 13 at Southern CT State University. Named after Dixwell’s Monterery Cafe\, where legendary jazz performers including Duke Ellington\, Billie Holiday\, Charles Parker and John Coltrane graced the stage alongside local giants\, this first installment of the Renaissance Rhythms series brings together live music\, discussion\, and refined revelry to honor the captivating history of the Harlem Renaissance and the thriving jazz scene of New Haven. \nThe evening features performances by Cliff & Friends Trio\, and members of The Monk Family. Before we break in our dancing shoes\, one of the highlights of the night is a lively panel discussion about the past\, present and future of jazz. \nCome dressed in the style and glamour of the Harlem Renaissance\, and enjoy complimentary food and drinks alongside community and live music! \nFree admission. DESCRIPTION:FREE ADMISSION \nAttendees will experience various Greater New Haven-based poets\, spoken word artists\, musicians\, and visual artists who center the liberation of Black bodies.\n  \nThis curation team will purchase artwork from each artist; these pieces will make up the art giveaway. There will be no tabling fees for visual arts to display their work\, thus creating a financially equitable art show.\n  \n\nThis program is inspired by breathe/burn\, a concert performed by the New Haven Symphony Orchestra on Sunday\, November 19\, 2023 at Southern CT State University.\n  \n\nPresented in partnership with Black Lives Matter New Haven\, Liberation U\, The Sun Experience LLC\, and Long Wharf Theatre.

DESCRIPTION:A Community Discussion\nRequiem means an act or token of remembrance. Sovereignty to mean:  \n1) Supreme power\, especially over a body politic. \n2) Freedoms from external control: autonomy \nFREE ADMISSION \nDiscussion: 2-3:30pm\nReception: 3:45-5pm \nThis is an open dialogue with Black Women to discuss:\n  \n\nWhat has happened in the world of Black women and Femmes since Breonna’s life was so savagely taken away?\nWhat does it mean to be sovereign in a world that centers on patriarchy\, oppression\, and capitalism?\nEven as the number of Black women leading in all career paths continues to rise\, why are our bodies not seen as valuable as our labor?\n\n  \nThe many triumphs and solutions Black women have and continue to make when it comes to securing their collective sovereignty\, and much more!
