Kavafian Plays Mozart

Tuesday • October 18, 2011

The NHSO and Music Director William Boughton perform classical masterpieces on Thursday, November 10, 7:30pm, at Woolsey Hall. The concert showcases Concertmistress Ani Kavafian performing Mozart’s Violin Concerto no. 1 in Bb Major, K. 207. This exhilarating program also includes Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin, Ives’ The Unanswered Question, and Haydn’s Symphony no. 104 in D Major, “London.” Kavafian Plays Mozart is made possible in part by the generous support of People’s United Bank, WSHU Public Radio, and season media sponsor the New Haven Register.

The program begins with Ravel’s spirited Le tombeau de Couperin, a stirring homage to the composer’s fallen comrades who died in World War I. Next, Ms. Kavafian navigates the high energy of Mozart’s Violin Concerto no. 1 as she continues her quest to perform all five of Mozart’s Violin Concertos. Charles Ives’ The Unanswered Question is a simple, yet powerful, work that contrasts silence with a solo trumpet “questioner.” The evening concludes with Symphony no. 104 in D Major, Haydn’s final symphony.

ANI KAVAFIAN is one of the world’s most admired violinists; a world-renowned soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. She has been Concertmistress of the NHSO since 2008. Having performed with America’s leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, her numerous solo engagements include performances at New York’s Carnegie and Alice Tully Halls. Ms. Kavafian is also a Professor at both Yale and Stony Brook Universities. She has been featured in many television music specials and has performed at the White House on several occasions.
