NHSO Announces Winner of 2009 Excellence in Music Teaching Award

The Education committee of the NHSO is pleased to announce this year’s winner for the Excellence in Music Teaching Award, Daniel Cross, band director at Betsy Ross Arts Magnet School in New Haven.

Mr. Cross has over thirty years experience in the field of music education.  He has been described as a gifted musician who is humble in manner but fierce in talent. He believes in “old school” teaching, therefore all of his students have been given the opportunity to learn the fundamentals and techniques needed to be a musician. The Betsy Ross Arts Magnet School Band has performed at numerous venues throughout the Greater New Haven area, always receiving rave reviews. Some of the numerous awards he has received include: The Mentor Teacher Award, for outstanding work with student teachers (Yale), a Bronze Star, for service U.S. Army-Vietnam and Kapa Delta Pi for the National Honor Society in Education.

Mr. Cross will be honored on stage at the NHSO’s upcoming Pops Concert, “Simply Sinatra”, Friday, March 6th, 2009, 7:30pm, at the Shubert Theater. A reception will follow the concert.
