THE BIG BANG THEORY COMES TO NEW HAVEN

New Haven, CT September 15, 2009 Join the New Haven Symphony Orchestra (NHSO) when its Third Annual Family Concert Series presents The Big Bang Theory, Saturday, October 10th, 2:00-3:00pm, Omni Hotel Ballroom, New Haven. This performance is sure to rattle your bones and lull you to sleep with a vast collection of instruments, rhythms, and cultural traditions from around the world. Special guest artists include Aly and Seny Camara, a father and son drum and dance duo from Guinea West Africa, and Korean master musician and composer Jin Hi Kim. Listen, feel, move, and rejoice with The Big Bang Theory!

Aly Camara hails from a small village in Guinea, West Africa. By the age of six, Aly began learning traditional dancing and drumming of West African culture. In 1993, Aly was selected to join Les Ballets Bougarabou, a touring company that visited the U.S. and Canada, playing major world music and folklore festivals. Around this time, Aly began teaching children and adults in New York City, at the Bernice Johnson Cultural Arts Center and the Fareta School of Dance and Drum. In 1995, Aly was selected dance instructor of New Haven’s School of African Rhythm. He continues to teach and perform with his company Kouffin Kanécké throughout New Haven’s public and private schools.

Jin Hi Kim is a world-renowned composer, and plays the ancient Korean komungo, a fretted board zither. She is heralded for her innovative fusion of the komungo into the Western contemporary music scene, and co-designed the world’s only electric komungo. Kim is the current Music Alive Composer-in-Residence at the New Haven Symphony Orchestra a two year residence sponsored by Meet the Composer and the League of American Orchestras.
