Alasdair Neale conducts the New Haven Symphony Orchestra in a special 125th Anniversary celebratory concert, free on the New Haven Green. Presented as part of the International Festival of Arts and Ideas, the Orchestra will share the stage with local and international music stars, and will highlight New Haven’s vibrant, world-class music scene.
The first half of the program brings together musicians from three of New Haven’s premiere steel bands for a Classical-Caribbean mash-up. The music will include Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On?” and Trinity, an original concerto for Steel Band and Orchestra by Connecticut composer Deborah Fischer Teason.
The second half will be sizzling, summer party with Tiempo Libre, a band that has been nominated for three Grammys and has been featured on The Tonight Show, Live from Lincoln Center, and Dancing with the Stars. The group’s goal is to use music to impart their Afro-Caribbean heritage and their adopted American experience.
