America the Beautiful

Friday • March 30, 2012

The NHSO will be at its flag-waving best when it presents America the Beautiful, Thursday, April 12, 7:30pm at Woolsey Hall. William Boughton leads the NHSO, the Heritage Chorale of New Haven, baritone Cameron McPhail, and percussionist Svet Stoyanov through an evening of music by American composers.

America the Beautiful explores our American musical heritage through traditional favorites from “Yankee Doodle” and “God Bless America” to future American masterworks by living American Composers: Rainbow Body by Christopher Theofanidis and Loud Love Songs by David Lang. The Heritage Chorale and Cameron McPhail will inspire audiences with their voices and vibrato on spirituals and flags will be waving on patriotic anthems by Irving Berlin, John Philip Sousa, and more.

RICHARD ENGLISH TRIBUTE
The April 12 performance is dedicated in memory of New Haven native Richard L. English, an arts patron, pianist, and philanthropist with a passion for music and love of the New Haven community. Mr. English left a generous bequest to the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven that benefits the NHSO, Connecticut Yankee Council Boy Scouts of America, the New Haven Museum, and the Neighborhood Music School. The four beneficiaries will be on hand that evening to honor Mr. English and his outstanding contributions to the New Haven community.

The evening includes a presentation on the English Family’s legacy in New Haven by the New Haven Museum. Boy Scout Troop-453 will serve as ushers for the NHSO’s concert. The Neighborhood Music School Jazz Ensemble will perform during intermission, and four student musicians from NMS will play on stage side-by-side with NHSO musicians for the patriotic anthems.
