New Haven, CT March 28, 2011: Join the NHSO and Music Director William Boughton on Thursday, April 7, 7:30pm, at Woolsey Hall, New Haven and Sunday, April 10, 3:00pm, at Shelton Intermediate School for Classic Brahms featuring Haydn’s Symphony No. 101 in D Major and Brahms’ Symphony No. 4.
Joseph Haydn’s joyous harmonies are complemented by the poetic and grand Fourth Symphony by Brahms. Symphony No. 101 by Haydn, commonly known as “The Clock” due to the rhythm heard throughout the second movement, has been a popular crowd favorite since its London premiere in 1794. Brahms’ Fourth is perhaps the most intense and profound of all his symphonies, starting simply with a sigh in the violins and taking the listener on a constantly evolving emotional journey.
Prior to the evening’s performance join us for Prelude, held from 6:30-7:00pm at the Slifka Center. Professor of Music and American Studies at Wesleyan University, Neely Bruce, will discuss the compositions of Haydn and Brahms. Prelude pre-concert discussions are engaging, enlightening, and free.
Also taking place before the concert will be Symphony Suppers at Union League Café. Join fellow music lovers at 5:00pm for lively conversation and a pre-concert dinner at New Haven’s premier Parisian brasseire, only steps from Woolsey Hall. Dinner is $35.00 per person and seating is limited; contact Elaine Carroll at ecarroll@newhavensymphony.org or call (203) 865-0831, ext. 12 if you wish to attend.
