New Haven, CT (April 25, 2014): The New Haven Symphony Orchestra (NHSO) is pleased to announce that New Music USA has awarded a generous $7,000 grant in support of the Symphony’s 2015 Artist Residency with composer Chris Brubeck. This grant further advances the Symphony’s reputation as a nationally prominent advocate for new music and presenter of innovative education programs. The NHSO is also a recent winner of an ASCAP Award for Programming of Contemporary Music, as well as grants from The Aaron Copland Fund for Music, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Fromm Foundation.
The NHSO is one of 60 organizations to be awarded a grant from New Music USA in this funding period, out of a nationally competitive pool of 1,618 projects. From the 3% of proposals that earned an award, the NHSO is one of only five American orchestras to be recognized. The NHSO’s 2015 Artist Residency with Chris Brubeck will bring his skills as a composer and multi-instrumentalist to the schools, community centers, and neighborhoods of Greater New Haven. Chris will serve as an artistic presenter of educational programs, a designer of arts-integrated classroom curricula, a concert soloist, and an activist for relevant and reciprocal educational initiatives.
NHSO Executive Director Elaine Carroll remarked: “The New Haven Symphony Orchestra is so thankful to have been recognized by America’s leading 21st Century music advocacy organization, New Music USA. Our work to engage some of the brightest voices in American music with New Haven neighborhoods—from Augusta Read Thomas and Daniel Bernard Roumain, to Christopher Theofanidis and now, Chris Brubeck—will have a lasting impact on the artistic vitality of our great city and region.” New Music USA serves the new American music community through grantmaking, advocacy, and media platforms that bridge music makers with their audience.
