The New Haven Symphony Orchestra (NHSO) will kick off the New Year with Jupiter’s Passion on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at 7:30pm in Woolsey Hall. Led by guest conductor Paul Polivnick, the program will feature the NHSO string sections with repertoire including Mozart’s “Jupiter” Symphony No. 41 and Stravinsky’s Concerto in D for Strings, plus Barber’s Violin Concerto and Dvorak’s Romance for Violin & Orchestra featuring guest violinist Hye-Jin Kim.
This concert is the 2014-2015 School Night at the Symphony, when the NHSO invites all K-12 students, teachers, staff, and their families to attend free-of-charge. Teachers and families who wish to participate in School Night need to register in advance at newhavensymphony.org/school-night-at-the-symphony.
Guest conductor Paul Polivnick will be filling in for Music Director William Boughton, who was originally scheduled to lead this concert. Maestro Boughton has withdrawn while he recovers from a medical procedure which took place in December. Boughton will return to conducting the NHSO at “Ansel Adams, Bernstein & Brubeck” on March 12 at the Shubert Theater.
Conductor Paul Polivnick is a prominent figure on the world stage, conducting fine orchestras across the United States, Europe and Asia. Currently the Conductor Laureate of the New Hampshire Music Festival where he was Music Director from 1992-2009, Polivnick has served as Music Director of the Oberlin Conservatory Orchestras, Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Harmonia Classica of Vienna, amongst others. Hye-Jin Kim has performed as soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New Jersey Symphony as well as with the BBC Concert Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Pan Asia Symphony and the Hannover Chamber Orchestra. She has appeared in major venues across North America, Europe and Asia, including Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater, Kimmel Center Verizon Hall, Salzburg’s Mirabel Schloss and St. John’s, Smith Square, London. Ms. Kim has also served as a cultural representative for Korea in Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan through concerts and outreach opportunities.
