NHSO’s “Buy-a-Note” Campaign Raising Money for Education!

New Haven, CT, October 1, 2008: Today, the New Haven Symphony Orchestra announced that its annual “Buy-a-Note” campaign, which raises much-needed funds in support of the Orchestra’s innovative music education programs, has taken in more that $14,000 towards its goal of $20,000 for the year. The amount represents the largest sum raised by this date in the history of the 20+ year old annual campaign. The drive is scheduled to end on November 1, 2008.

“We are truly gratified by the generosity of our donors and patrons who are making this campaign so successful, and we fully expect to reach our goal,” said NHSO Board President, Chris Getman. “The NHSO has a passionate commitment to providing quality music education programs to every child in the Greater New Haven area. It’s our mission to do this, and we are very proud of it.”

Co-chaired by NHSO Board member, Bette Gruskay, and long-time volunteer, Nancy Cassella, “Buy-a-Note” gives donors the opportunity to support the Orchestra’s education initiatives by purchasing musical notes — double whole notes ($200), whole notes ($100), half notes ($50), and quarter notes ($25). The contributions directly support the Orchestra’s Young People’s Concerts, Family Concert Series, Natural Rhythms, Musical Mentors, Showcase of Young Artists and other programs, which reach more than 20,000 young people each year. The donors will be listed in a special acknowledgement advertisement in the New Haven Register appearing on Sunday, November 16, 2008.

“For as little as $25, a person can make a tremendous difference in a child’s educational experience,” said Ms. Gruskay. “Many studies have pointed to the educational and social benefits that children receive when they participate in these kinds of programs. Unfortunately, music education is often the first item to be cut when the economy goes sour or when the schools face budgetary shortfalls. “Buy-a-Note” is a way that the average person can show their support.”
