The New Haven Symphony Orchestra and the University of New Haven partner for the Orchestra Careers and Opportunities Symposium
West Haven, CT, September 23, 2008: The New Haven Symphony Orchestra (NHSO) and the University of New Haven (UNH) will host the first Orchestra Careers and Opportunities Symposium, Tuesday, September 30, 2:00-5:00pm, at UNH, in Dodd’s Hall.
The purpose of the event is to make high school and college students aware of careers in orchestra management and production. There will be a panel discussion—led by UNH Dean of Arts and Sciences, Ron Nowaczyk—where the staff of the NHSO, Natalie Forbes, Executive Director, William Boughton, Music Director, Jim Wright, Development Director, Cathy Segal, Finance Director, and Steve Collins, Education Director will describe their job functions, role in the NHSO, educational background and career paths.
The NHSO is one of a handful of orchestras nationwide to pilot this program under the auspice of the League of American Orchestras (the League). The League hopes programming like this one will raise young people’s awareness around the opportunities for careers in orchestral administration. Allison Ball, Director of Leadership Training and Recruitment will speak at the symposium on behalf of the League.
Following the panel discussion, the speakers will explore case studies of recent college graduates and NHSO employees Stephanie Hardenber, Development Associate and Nicole Gallego, Administrative Assistant. Students will have opportunities to ask questions of the guest speakers and schedule appointments for private career consultations. Also featured, is the NHSO’s acting principal cellist, Mihai Marica who will perform a solo cello piece. Composer David Keberle will preview a recently commissioned electronic music collage created for the NHSO’s Education Program.
