Requiem means an act or token of remembrance. Sovereignty to mean:

1) Supreme power, especially over a body politic.
2) Freedoms from external control: autonomy

FREE ADMISSION

Discussion: 2-3:30pm
Reception: 3:45-5pm

This is an open dialogue with Black Women to discuss:

What has happened in the world of Black women and Femmes since Breonna’s life was so savagely taken away?
What does it mean to be sovereign in a world that centers on patriarchy, oppression, and capitalism?
Even as the number of Black women leading in all career paths continues to rise, why are our bodies not seen as valuable as our labor?

The many triumphs and solutions Black women have and continue to make when it comes to securing their collective sovereignty, and much more! We are hoping that the audience leave with inspiration to challenge assumptions, to think critically about the world and the Black Women and Femmes in it, and to come away with heightened appreciation for Black Women and Femmes.

This program is inspired by breathe/burn, a concert performed by the New Haven Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, November 19, 2023 at Southern CT State University.

Presented in partnership with Black Lives Matter New Haven, Liberation U, The Sun Experience LLC, and Long Wharf Theatre.
