2009 CT YOUTH ORCHESTRA FESTIVAL!

New Haven, CT March 17, 2009: The New Haven Symphony Orchestra (NHSO) is proud to announce The 2009 CT Youth Orchestra Festival, Saturday, March 21, from 3pm to 5:30pm and Sunday, March 22, from 11am to 5:30pm at ACES Educational Center for the Arts, New Haven. The Festival provides a rare opportunity for youth orchestras from around Connecticut to gather, perform for each other, learn from special guest artists, and work with young composer Jay Greenberg.

Maestro Boughton and NHSO musicians; Stephan Tieszen, Tom Hudson, Olav van Hezewijk, Scott Cranston, and Dave Smith will be hosting a youth orchestra Play-in Saturday, March 21. High school students on all orchestral instruments, are invited to experience a “workshop reading” of Jay Greenberg’s Fifth Symphony. Mr. Greenberg is a young composer, and has been called a “modern day Mozart.” His Fifth Symphony was recently recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jose Serebrier.  For more information on Jay Greenberg and his work, visit:  http://www.jaygreenbergmusic.com.

On Sunday, March 22, participating orchestras will take part in workshops and clinics led by NHSO musicians, Music Director William Boughton, and special guest artists as well as perform in public “workshop concerts” for one another. The Festival culminates with a joint performance of Grieg’s In the Hall of the Mountain King under Maestro Boughton’s direction and Mr. Greenberg’s supervision, Jay Greenberg will attend the Festival from 1pm to 4pm.

Students can register for the play-in by emailing Corina Zapata at intern@newhavensymphony.org or, by calling Nicole Gallego at 203.931.2991.

This program is made possible in part by the generous support of National Endowment for the Arts, Target, Southern Connecticut State University and the New Haven Register. For sponsorship information please call Stephanie Hardenber at 203.931.2997.
