3 venues for New Haven orchestra’s holiday show, with gospel accent

The New Haven Symphony Orchestra’s “Holiday Extravaganza” typically is one of the year’s most popular and lively events, and this year’s trio of concerts will make a little history, too.

In addition to holiday favorites including “Sleigh Ride” and a holiday singalong, NHSO Pops Conductor Chelsea Tipton will lead the symphony while Jonathan Berryman will lead the Heritage Chorale of New Haven in the music by Raymond Wise; that’s three African Americans in key roles.

“I’ve been in New Haven for 25 years,” said Berryman in a phone chat the other day, “and this is the first time that we have two African-American conductors responsible for a performance.”
